Carver and North Atlanta students honored at D.C. gala for fight against tobacco

Four APS students have been named Youth Advocates of the Year by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. The teens are members of the H.E.A.R.T. Coalition of Atlanta which helps raise awareness of and take action against tobacco throughout Atlanta and in the African-American community.

The young leaders joined more than 400 public health, political, civic and business leaders at the 18th annual gala in Washington, D.C. on May 15, 2014.

Joseph Cole, 18, a 2014 graduate of Carver Health Science and Research; Cantrell Foster, 18, a senior at North Atlanta High School; Deshanda Smarr, 16, a junior at Carver Health Science and Research; and Desha Smarr, 15, a sophomore at Carver School of the Arts accepted the award.

The group was awarded a $2,500 grant which will go towards future youth initiatives of the H.E.A.R.T. Coalition and the winners will serve as ambassadors for Tobacco-Free Kids.

“Young leaders like them are crucial in the fight to make tobacco history and end this epidemic for good. With their help, we can create the first tobacco-free generation.” said Matthew L. Myers, President of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

The honor is a result of their work on a successful campaign for a tobacco-free parks ordinance last year. The teens gathered signatures for a petition, created displays and posters for area malls and organized Kick Butts Day and Great American Smokeout events.

The teens also attended a City Council meeting to inform council members about the problems of secondhand smoke and cigarette butt litter in community parks. The ordinance passed with unanimous support. The students plan to work on a countywide smoke-free parks campaign in the future.

The H.E.A.R.T. Coalition of Atlanta is a community coalition funded by The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Carver HSR students are National HOSA winners

CarverNationalHOSAwinnersWe at Carver HSR would like to congratulate our 2013 National HOSA winners! We have two winners who worked hard and competed against the top 3 students in EACH of our 50 states. The event was Life Support Skills in which students demonstrated proper CPR skills and are given a random First Aid skill. Julian Colvard received a bronze metal placing 3rd and Brandon Green received a gold metal placing 1st. We are very excited for these young men!

HOSA is a national student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education Division of ACTE. HOSA’s two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. HOSA’s goal is to encourage all health occupations instructors and students to join and be actively involved in the HSE-HOSA Partnership.

HOSA provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation, and recognition exclusively for secondary, postsecondary, adult, and collegiate students enrolled in HSE programs. HOSA is 100% health care.

Carver-Morehouse School of Medicine Summer Program

High school students from APS and area private schools were recognized in an awards ceremony for their participation in the Morehouse School of Medicine Vivien Thomas Auxiliary Research Program held at the New Schools at Carver, School of Health Sciences and Research on June 28, 2013. The four week summer academic program recruited high school students to serve as apprentices in biomedical research laboratories.

Students conducted research for four weeks under the direction of a medical school faculty member and learn the content, process, and methodology involved in inquiry science. The program culminates with students presenting their research findings to the faculty and staff at Morehouse School of Medicine. The interaction with scientific role models to learn the content, process and methodology involved in inquiry science can result in increased student motivation and positive attitudes toward learning science. The primary goal of the program is to increase the number of minority students interested in pursuing a career in the biomedical sciences.

“It was all about science and I learned a lot of information about tecnniques that scientists use,” said Adrian Pizano, a rising 9th grader from Price Middle School who will attend the New Schools at Carver in the fall. “We did a lot of hands-on activities and labs.” “The program helped me to already know some things I will need to know when school starts.”

Sydni Gilmore, a rising 9th grader from the Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy who will attend Mays High School this fall agreed, “This summer I learned a lot about what it is really like to be a scientist and all the knowledge and preparation it takes to conduct research in a laboratory. I know I am now ahead of the game.” IMG_4760

South Atlanta CAD’s Derralyn Morgan places 2nd in Turner Voices Competition

SAtlanta CAD Turner Voices 2nd placeFor the past two months, Marietou Keita, Derralyn Morgan, Sanovia Dossie, and Mercedes Brown from South Atlanta CAD have been participating in the Turner Voices competition with their Social Studies teacher, Rhea Gupta. Ms. Gupta was given the opportunity to take four students to the CNN center for three writing workshops. The purpose of the competition is to hear Atlanta’s youth voice. So, 30 students from various Metro area schools (South Atlanta CAD, Washington, Tri-Cities, and Berkmar High School) were chosen to participate. With Ms. Gupta and their mentors students have been writing essay on “how education transforms”. They were allowed to craft essays however they interpreted this prompt making sure their voices shone through.

All workshops were held afterschool at the CNN Center from 6-8:30pm. During these workshops students were paired with writers, editors and personalities from CNN, TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network and other Turner networks. During each workshop these Journalism professionals have been working with the children on their pieces of writing as well as sharing stories about their careers and educational pathways. Outside of these workshops these four students have stayed with Ms. Gupta almost every day afterschool to work on their essays. The contest ended two weeks ago and all CAD students had semifinal round quality essays but Derralyn Morgan placed 2nd in the entire city! The difference between Derralyn and the first place winner was only one point. Representatives from Turner were so impressed by these CAD students they shared with Ms. Gupta that they had never met more poised, articulate and bright young adults. Congratulations Marietou, Derralyn, Sanovia and Mercedes!

Carver Early College’s Jason Gresham is Giving Back through Sports

Jason Gresham, a sophomore at Carver Early College, initially started playing baseball at age 5 because he liked playing outside and “getting dirty”. Now, he plays because he loves the sport, is good at it, and it gives him a platform to mentor younger students. Through a non-profit organization called L.E.A.D (Launch, Expose, Advise and Direct), headed by C.J. and Kelli Stewart, Jason has discovered that baseball can take him down very exciting paths. As a response to the low percentage (about 2%) of African-Americans represented in professional baseball, L.E.A.D was established to help at-risk, inner city males achieve success through civic engagement, solid baseball skills and access to higher education through baseball (i. e. baseball scholarships, etc.).

Jason says that L.E.A.D has helped him to become a better student because he has to have the required grade point average to continue membership in the organization. He says that through L.E.A.D, he has met many baseball professionals and that he has developed his baseball skill set to the position of a utility player. A utility player is one that can play any position on the field.  As a L.E.A.D Ambassador, he goes to middle schools two or three times a month and on Saturdays and mentors younger students in baseball. Jason has logged more than 200 service hours with L.E.A.D.  This impressive community work, coupled with an outstanding essay, helped him to be selected as a recipient of the 2012-13 WXIA 11 Alive Kids Who Care Award. When he’s not playing baseball, Jason enjoys playing music. He’s a trombonist who is a drum-major-in-training. Next year, he will be leading the Carver High School Band as a Drum Major. Jason’s aspiration is to land a band/baseball scholarship and attend Florida A & M University. He plans to study computer engineering. Congratulations Jason!

Writing to Success at Carver Early College

CarverEarlyCollege_WritingtoSuccess_011513The juniors of Carver Early College gathered in December for the third annual Writing Test Celebration program. The juniors of Carver Early College boast a 100% pass rate for the third consecutive year. This year, they had an 18% exceed rate which is 7 points higher than the district’s average. Keith Crawford and Chamondrea Lane , junior class president, were the master and mistress of ceremony.

         Reflections from several juniors indicated that reading helped to prepare them for the writing test. They said that one of the key benefits of reading was that it increases vocabulary. The juniors also thanked their teachers for thoroughly preparing them for the writing test by teaching writing skills such as the APS technique. APS is an acronym for considering the audience, purpose and subject when you’re writing. All of the students were presented with medals of honor for their landmark achievement.

Mr. Denene, assistant principal of Carver Early College, congratulated the students. He then admonished them to continue to become better writers because writing is the quintessential skill of the twenty-first century. He said that it was the third skill on a list of nineteen that most employers seek in their prospective employees. He said that in addition to writing being an essential skill, it helps your thinking and creativity. He also stated that although good writing has structure and form, it also allows unlimited creativity.

Eighth Graders Make Significant Gains on the 21st Century Skills Assessment

As of 2008, all 50 states were required to report to the U.S. Department of Education on technology literacy, using information and communication technology (ICT) standards based on the National Education Technology Standards (NETS) for Students (International Society for Technology in Education [ISTE], 2007).

As a district, our 8th grade students made significant gains from the administration of the pre and post 21st Century Skills Assessment.  This is the first year our 8th grade students have been assessed using the state sponsored 21st Century Skills Assessment; therefore the results are providing baseline data.  Since the implementation of Technology Awareness for Global Citizens (TAGC), 8th grade students have demonstrated gains in the area of mastering the National Educational Technology Standards for Students.

The 8th Grade 21st Century Skills Assessment was administered in February 2011. This assessment uses a blend of interactive, multiple choice, performance-based and knowledge-based questions to measure and report technology literacy.  The assessment is administered online and questions are randomly assigned to students.

Grady High competes in state mock trial competition

You may recall our intern, Grady High junior Elizabeth McGlamry, who in her spare time is a championship competitor for Grady’s vaunted mock trial team. (See video above for refresher!) Here she writes about the ongoing state championship this weekend. She’ll have an update next week, with a personal perspective on the competition. Good luck to Elizabeth and Grady. Here’s her take:

With exhibits and examinations in hand, 18 of the state’s most talented mock trial teams prepare to head to the Gwinnett County Courthouse for Georgia’s High School Mock Trial State competition. Sixteen regional champions and two wild card picks will go to face-off in mock trials for the state champion title. The case is a liability case over a wrongful termination because of a violation of civil rights set in the fictional city of Miltonville. Two police officers – a former detective and the chief of police – battle to prove who was right: the detective, who believes he was fired for a comment he posted on a social networking site called “MiltFace” and the chief, who vehemently denies such accusations.

Teams provide 14 competing members two provide for two sides of the case, defense and plaintiff, and each side has three attorneys, three witness roles and one time keeper. Sides go against the opposite of another school for roughly two and a half hours, creating a law-and-order-type atmosphere as they conduct an entire trial from preliminary matters to closing arguments. With two rounds on Saturday and the semifinal and final rounds on Sunday, the competition spans the whole weekend and ends with the crowning of a new state championship and the passing of the giant, state-champion gavel.

APS teacher and alum Matt Westmoreland speaks to Vals and Sals

You may recall Matt Westmoreland from our Atlanta Educator profile on the Carver Early College teacher and Grady High grad (Class of 2006). Here we get to watch him speaking to the valedictorians, salutatorians and “STAR” students during the annual breakfast honoring their work, hosted by Georgia Power and featuring APS Superintendent Dr. Beverly L. Hall. It’s a moving speech that touches on a racial divide that challenges the city in general and our education system in particular. Westmoreland left them with a touching reminder: As you embark on an amazing college adventure, don’t forget your home. He clearly didn’t.

We had a chance to videotape some of the speeches delivered by the valedictorians, salutatorians and “STAR” students who were honored this week at the annual breakfast featuring Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Beverly L. Hall and hosted by Georgia Power. Here we get to watch in on Paul Harris, Jr. (valedictorian and “STAR” student of Carver Early College) and Edward Furman Mosely, III (salutatorian of Douglass High) speak during the segment “Fulfilling the Dream.” Enjoy!
