More than 400 Atlanta Public Schools (APS) fourth- and fifth-grade students spent the morning at the College Football Hall of Fame on September 22, joining schools from across Georgia who tuned in virtually to celebrate Georgia Reads Day, a statewide event designed to highlight the importance of literacy and student achievement.
Hosted by the Georgia Council on Literacy, the statewide celebration featured Malcolm Mitchell, former NFL player, author, and Georgia Reads Coach. Mitchell read from his children’s book The Magician’s Hat during a reading rally, encouraging students to view reading as an essential skill that supports lifelong learning and success.
Students from Kimberly Elementary School, Hutchinson Elementary School, Barack & Michelle Obama Academy, Finch Elementary School, Heritage Elementary School, The Boyce L. Ansley School, and Centennial Academy Charter School each received a copy of Mitchell’s book and lunch provided by Chick-fil-A.
A magician also performed for students, reinforcing the theme of Mitchell’s story and the event’s message about the power of imagination and learning.
Beyond the September event, Georgia Reads Day aims to inspire a love of reading among Georgia’s students and to strengthen literacy engagement in schools and families year-round.
