Atlanta Public Schools’ (APS) 2026 Special Olympics Track and Field event brought together all of the talented Exceptional Education student athletes to Lakewood Stadium for a day full of fun and friendly competition.
Throughout the school year, the student athletes train to compete, showcase their talents, and celebrate the growth they’ve achieved at the Special Olympics. The student-athletes competed in events like the 50-meter dash, the long jump, tennis ball throw, and more. There was also a developmental tent filled with a myriad of games and activities.

“What makes our athletes ready for today is their commitment to being ready and preparing for the sport,” said APS director of Exceptional Education Anne Dirden. “They have an opportunity to come out, showcase their sportsmanship and the talents that they possess. The level of excitement is on 10 as they come through the tunnel that leads them to the field.”
APS has partnered with Special Olympics of Georgia (SOGA) for 31 years, and APS student and staff volunteers helped facilitate the many events across the field.
“This is my second time being a part of this and it seems to get bigger and better every year with more student athletes that are participating, more parents, families, and community members that are part of this partnership,” said APS Superintendent Dr. Bryan Johnson. “This is our community of believers in action. Whether they’re manning a station, grabbing waters, setting up a tent, or helping to bring lunches, it’s really incredible to see all of these different facets come together to make this a really special day for these students.”
