Celebrating Grandparents in “Grand” Style

Many schools celebrated National Grandparents Day on Friday, September 6th.

Marian McQuade, a housewife in West Virginia, worked to recognize Grandparents Day in the 1970s. She hoped to persuade grandchildren to cherish the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide.

In 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated annually on the Sunday following Labor Day.

This year, grandparents attended a breakfast and presentation in their honor at Bethune Elementary School.

Students presented poems about grandparents as they spent quality time with their loved ones.

At Miles Intermediate School, grandparents and grandchildren read books in the media center throughout the day.

“The purpose of the event is to help promote reading at Miles Intermediate School, family reading time, and children reading and learning with their grandparents,” said Nikki Bivins, Media Specialist at Miles.

Students and their grandparents also created bookmarks together and had their photos taken to commemorate the special occasion.

Burgess-Peterson Academy celebrated Grandparents Day with a “Passion for Our Elders” event, which was a great success with over 200 grandparents in attendance!
