August 31st was a special day for planting seeds in the garden at Burgess-Peterson Academy. Parents and teachers joined students from Pre-K through 5th grade in the garden from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It was a great experience for students and parents alike as they spent quality time in their garden together. The purpose of this event was for everyone to plant seeds of the same vegetables on the same today in order for the yearly harvest contest to be judged fairly. The garden is maintained with a set schedule by the students, staff, and volunteers. Overall, it is a great experience for students to clear weeds, add compost, plant seeds, water the plants, harvest, and watch plants grow.
The harvesting day was a great success as it was full with excited students and parent volunteers. “We’ve gotten the kids to cheer for brocolli, cabbage, and kale, so anytime you can get kids to jump up and down for things like that, you know something’s working, and they’re having a lot of good fun,” says Michelle Rice, the DeKalb County Master Gardener.
