9/11: Atlanta Students Honor Local Heroes

by talkupaps

Smiles and laughter filled the air this week at Boyd Elementary School as students in grades Kindergarten through fifth spent time with City of Atlanta police officers and fire fighters.  Hands on Atlanta provided a unique opportunity for students to honor First Responders through their Cocoa for Heroes art project.

The day of service ended with students donating decorated coffee mugs filled with goodies to their community heroes.

Bolton Academy students also honored 9/11 by delivering cards and baked goods to their local police and fire stations.

Bolton Academy students make a very special delivery.

Students from Coan Middle School worked this weekend with the Southeastern Horticulture Society to maintain the Edgewood Community Learning Garden/Coan Middle School Edible Schoolyard. The Southeastern Horticultural Society is a membership organization dedicated to promoting the knowledge, art and enjoyment of horticulture throughout the Southeastern United States. Volunteers were asked to help build picnic benches and tables, construct a fence around the garden, and perform landscaping.

In honor of the 10 year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Hands on Atlanta has a full weekend of volunteer events available for families.  This year marks the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a moment that – through tragedy – brought together cultures, bridged differences and united citizens of goodwill around the world in a spirit of unity and commitment. In tribute to all of those who were lost and the tens of thousands who rose in service, 9/11 has been federally designated a National Day of Service and Remembrance.
