APS collaborates with Georgia Aquarium to improve science education

APS high school science teachers attended a workshop at the Georgia Aquarium Tuesday as part of an ongoing effort to improve science education in the classroom. The APS/Georgia Aquarium Collaboration 2010-11 also included a fall field trip by some 600 high school science students, and a similar trip scheduled for February. Isolda Antonio, program coordinator for student support in APS’ Office of High Schools, spearheaded the program with Brian Davis, the Georgia Aquarium’s director of Education. Atlanta Public Schools is the only district involved in this hands-on program, which Davis says seeks to increase science awareness among African-American students. He notes that African Americans are woefully underrepresented in science professions, particularly in marine biology.

During the workshop, teachers had a great opportunity to create lesson plans and discuss ways to incorporate information from the Georgia Aquarium into course work.
