Deerwood Academy spearheads hand-sanitizer drive for Haiti’s children

Deerwood Academy students made an immediate connection with the children of Haiti. With members of the faculty as well as some of its students having family in Haiti, it was a no-brainer that the students of Deerwood Academy would extend a “helping hand,” thus the beginning of its school-wide service learning project. Recognizing that they wanted to make a difference by touching the children of Haiti, students decided that they could make the biggest immediate difference for them by helping their conditions be more sanitary to avoid the spread of germs and disease.

The goal: collect a minimum of 1,000 pocket size bottles of hand sanitizer to send to Haiti. Each bottle will be labeled with a message of support from the Deerwood Academy students. In addition, parents have joined the efforts and are donating clothing of all sizes, water, Gatorade, first aid necessities, and toiletries.

“Deerwood Academy students believe that it is their responsibility to make the world a better place for all and to help others when they are in need,” said Principal Eunice Robinson. “As a part of their International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program studies, they are becoming informed citizens of the world.”

All relief items will be sent to Haiti via The American Red Cross.
