APS Technology Fair

The 2014 Atlanta Public Schools Technology Fair will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Atlanta Technical College located at 1560 Metropolitan Parkway SW, Atlanta, Georgia, 30310. The Atlanta Public Schools Technology Fair affords students the opportunity to present technology projects to the community and district partners.

If you know a student who would be interested in participating, please encourage them to register by the Dec. 20^th deadline.

The tech fair will feature hands-on exhibits demonstrating current and emerging technologies from industry leaders. This event exposes students in grades 3-12 to real-world science and technology applications and will inspire them to pursue careers in these areas.

Students in grades 3-12 are eligible to participate in the competition. Additionally, first place winners will also participate in the 2014 State Technology Fair.

There may be up to two people on a team for each project, but teams and individuals compete against each other within each grade level grouping.

Students must be registered according to their current grade level, but their project may be placed in a higher grade classification if on a team with an older student. Students entering as a team must compete at the grade level of the higher grade of the two team members. Any student on a team, regardless of grade, may compete at a higher grade level but never at a lower grade level.

This year, the Georgia Educational Technology Fair is thrilled to announce two new categories: Game Design and Mobile Apps. Both categories will be open to all grades 3-12 in the same groupings as the other categories, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, & 11-12. The State Technology Fair Committee is hopeful that these new categories will help students embrace the digital world of the 21st century.

Students promote decimals and girl power at Thomasville Heights

The mothers, daughters, aunts, sisters and grandparents of Thomasville Heights recently attended “Ladies’ Night Out” at Thomasville Heights Elementary School. During “Ladies’ Night Out” women and girls of all ages had the opportunity to spend time together and promote female empowerment throughout the school and community.

During the event, many women were honored for their contributions to society and commitment to youth. The ladies enjoyed engaging conversation, fun fellowship, and a wonderful dinner. Although the event was for ladies, the men and boys of Thomasville Heights volunteered to serve and assist throughout the evening. Thomasville Heights’ “Ladies’ Night Out” was a great success!

Additionally, students at Thomasville Heights are busy exploring the Dewey Decimal System.

Do you remember learning how to use the Dewey Decimal system to locate books in the library? Created by Melvil Dewey in 1876, the system is still being used in more than 200,000 libraries around the globe.

A library assigns a Dewey Decimal number that locates a particular volume in a position relative to other books in the library. This makes it easy to find any particular book and return it to its proper place on the library shelves.

Fifth grade students at Thomasville Heights Elementary recently learned all about the Classification System in conjunction with their math lesson on decimals.

Tiffany Stembridge-Taylor of Washington High School-Early College wins Atlanta Families’ Award

Tiffany Stembridge-Taylor, a math teacher at Washington High School-Early College, was shocked and overwhelmed with joy as she was presented with a check for $7,500 from Atlanta Families’ Awards for Excellence in Education (AFAEE).

This award includes funding for a professional development opportunity, a personal stipend, and funding for a school project. Mrs. Stembridge-Taylor’s project focuses on integrating technology into mathematics.

According to Mrs. Stembridge-Taylor, in today’s digitized society, one has to be in the know and at the forefront of technology. She hopes to increase student engagement and interests by using her funding to purchase technology (touchpads, iPods, and digital video) to teach various disciplines of mathematics.

“My goal is to increase student engagement and achievement through the use of technology while allowing them easier access to real world data collection,” Mrs. Stembridge-Taylor explains.

Mrs. Stembridge-Taylor is a native of Atlanta and a product of Atlanta Public Schools. She has eleven years of experience in education and has served students on the Booker T. Washington High School campus for the past ten years. Her traditional journey in education includes a Bachelor of Science Degree, Master of Science Degree, and Specialist Degree from the University of West Georgia, Georgia State University, and Lincoln Memorial University, respectively.

She has received many accolades through the years including Washington High School Teacher of the Year, Atlanta Public Schools High School Teacher of the Year Semi Finalist, Project GRAD Exemplary Teacher, and she has been recognized for showing significant student gains in mathematics. Mrs. Stembridge-Taylor has also served in several capacities during her tenure including advisor for National Honor Society, Beta Club, and Future Educators Association; Mathematics Department Chairperson, Grade Level Team Leader, New Teacher Mentor, Leadership Team Member, Ethics Advocate, and Student Support Team Chairperson. She has an unwavering love for education is ready to work hard for her students so that they will be prepared for college and careers, once they graduate high school.

M. Agnes Jones Elementary Celebrates STEM Careers

M. Agnes Jones Elementary School celebrated STEM Careers during its 2013 STEM Career Week festivities.

Students at M. Agnes Jones recently participated in STEM Career Week from September 30-October 4th. During the week students learned about various careers in technology, engineering, math and science.

Spelman and Morehouse student volunteers visited classrooms and shared their college experiences. Students also participated in a ‘Science for Everyone’ school assembly, and M Agnes Jones held its annual STEM Night during STEM Career Week.

Last year, M. Agnes Jones partnered with Georgia State University’s Early Childhood Education Department to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education.

The primary goal of the 3-STEMS grant is to increase the number of highly qualified teachers committed to high-need urban schools. Project activities include the development of a Professional Learning Site at partnering school M. Agnes Jones Elementary. The site will serve as a hub for certification and professional learning activities including STEM demonstration lessons for teachers, mentorship and coaching, and specialized STEM summer programs for children and teachers. The grant also supports school’s innovation projects led by teacher-faculty teams and featuring STEM curricular innovations.

Since January 2013, the 3-STEMS Partnership has successfully implemented several STEM activities, including coordinating M. Agnes Jones’ annual Career Day to include local scientists, and facilitating Georgia Tech’s Women in Engineering Student Ambassador program to present engineering career options to the fourth grade girls.

Students ignite a passion for science at Price Middle

IGNITE participants meet to prepare for an exciting day of science and technology.

The IBM Corporation and Price Middle School have cultivated a rewarding partnership over the past six years. Through the partnership, IBM employees offer various opportunities for Price students to explore science and technology.

IBM employees recently held an IGNITE (Igniting Interest in Technology and Engineering) technology academy for seventh and eighth grade boys at Price.

This year, sixteen young men were invited to participate in the IGNITE Technology Academy. During the workshop students learned how to program robots, create marble launchers, debug computer programs and re-build computers.

Last year, participants traveled to the Highlands IBM building and performed engineering tasks alongside engineers in various departments.

IBM believes the program will help to mold future engineers and scientists who can problem solve and think analytically. Throughout the academy the participants are exposed to many STEM standards. Additionally, the academy also focuses on college and career readiness, a component of the district’s Common Core Standards.

Adamsville & Miles students explore, create robots

What do you get when you combine science, students and robots? S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)!

Students at Adamsville Primary and Miles Intermediate recently participated in a robot exhibit sponsored by students from Mays High School. The Mays High School robotics team developed and ran the exhibit on site for the younger students.

A wonderful example of APS cluster collaboration, elementary students, who will one day attend Mays High School, were able to interact with and learn from their cluster peers. The Mays High School students provided the younger audience with a glimpse of some of the fun and educational initiatives they will have the opportunity to explore in high school.

During the exhibit students learned about different types of robots, and even had a chance to interact with and control a few of the contraptions.

At the end of the presentations, each student made his or her own robotic creations out of glue and paper. The students used their creativity, imagination and artistic skills to build their idea of the perfect robot.

Student Spotlight of the Week

Name: Najla Clark

Grade: 5th Grade

School: Kimberly Elementary School

Najla Clark, a 5th grade student at Kimberly Elementary School, is hardworking, successful and determined to reach for the stars. According to Najla’s 4th grade teacher, Mr. Arnold, she possesses all of the positive character traits you could ask for in a student, including honesty and integrity.

“If you have ever known a student who is excited to learn and wants to help others learn, then you know what Najla is like,” Mr. Arnold explained. “She is a reliable student who genuinely enjoys helping others. She gets along with everyone, has a great personality, and outstanding academics.”

Najla has always made the honor roll and exceeded in Reading and Math on the 4^th grade CRCT.

Najla has set immediate goals, as well as ambitious goals for her future. As a new 5^th grade student, she plans to join the safety patrol, reading bowl team, K-Kids and Beta Club. Najla aspires to one day become a chef, and she enjoys practicing her culinary skills by cooking for her family.

Najla is currently an anchor for the Busy Buzzy Bee Show, the morning announcement team at Kimberly. She has been a critical part of this team for 2 years.

“I can count on her to be on time and report the news accurately,” says Mr. Jolly, the advisor of the Kimberly news show.

Name: Adam Chandler

Grade: 7th Grade

School: Price Middle School

Friendly, helpful and always smiling are just some of the ways to describe Price Wildcat Adam Chandler. He describes himself as sensitive and fun. Adam loves to eat pizza, listen to a variety of music and dance. His favorite subject in school is math because he says it deals with money. His least favorite subject is Language Arts because he believes it is a fairly easy concept for him to grasp, and he enjoys being challenged.

Conquering challenges is a reoccurring theme with Adam.

He is currently enrolled in French at Price Middle School and enjoys the challenge of learning a new language. He hopes to raise money to travel to France this summer. He participates in the Afterschool All – Star program, and he hopes to get involved with other clubs and organizations this school year.

Adam aspires to one day become an electrical engineer, and he would like to invent a robot that can help him study and retain more knowledge.

“I enjoy being a Price Wildcat because it gives me a new experience to see who I really am,” Adam explained.

Adam is a young man with a bright future, but he also has a selfless heart. When asked what he would change in the world he responded, “Homelessness. I want everyone to live in a home. Everyone deserves that.”

With his self-confidence and determination, Adam will certainly have a positive impact on his school and community.

Name: Breahn Boswell

Grade: 3rd Grade

School: Parkside Elementary School

Breahn Boswell is an exemplary third grade student with ambition, dreams, and talents at Parkside Elementary School. She exhibits a stellar level of academic achievement, and always strives for excellence in her work. She is an honor student, and received awards for Principal’s List, art, Spanish, music, chorus, and citizenship.

Breahn has a passion for music, and is an accomplished singer. She hopes to become a concert singer in the future and perform in concert halls across the country. Her most recent success in her rising singing career was auditioning for the Atlanta Young Singers.

She loves to learn new things and is full of aspiration at a young age. She greatly admires her mother and father for encouraging her to pursue her dreams.

Breahn is a model student with great potential and bright future. She strives for high achievement in all her endeavors, and is driven to be successful.

Name: Angel Crawford

Grade: 7th

School: Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Acadamy (CSKYWLA) Middle School

Angel Crawford is an outstanding 7th grade student from Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy. She takes pride in earning As and leading by example. Angel is a trailblazer and believes in helping others reach their full potential. She participates on the debate team, technology team, robotics team, and she is a member of the BETA Club. This summer Angel was selected to participate in the Youth Leadership Summer Academy where she was voted “Most Likely to Succeed.” She also leads CSKYWLA Middle School’s morning communication team, and she is an active member of the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team.

Angel enjoys reading, playing basketball, shopping, tennis and hanging out with her friends, and with her bubbly personality Angel never meets a stranger. When asked what she loved most about CSKYWLA, Angel replied, “the CSK Experience and what it affords me to do.” She went on to elaborate on the numerous opportunities she has had through the After-School All-Stars program such as Lego Ladies, Digital Storytelling, field trips, and Fitness Tuesday.

LaJuana Ezzard, Angel’s Reading Bowl Coach says, “Angel is an exceptional student. We call her our ‘go-to’ person, because we can depend on her for anything, even at the last minute. She works very hard, and gives her all in everything she does.”

Angel’s favorite subject is math, and she wants to become a member of the SWAT team when she grows up.

GADOE: Georgia students see steady ACT scores, while nation drops

Aug. 21, 2013 – Georgia high school students’ scores on this year’s ACT college entrance exam held steady, even as a record number of students took the test and the national average score declined.

Georgia’s composite score this year was 20.7 – the same as last year – for public and private high school students, while the nation’s composite score dropped from 21.1 to 20.9. That means the gap between Georgia and the nation narrowed to .2 percentage points.

The Georgia ACT score is up from 2011 when students saw a composite of 20.6. Since then, the number of students taking the test has increased by more than 5,500. Generally, scores on such tests decline when the pool of test takers increases. More than half of Georgia’s high school students – 51 percent, or 48,505 students – took the ACT this spring, up from 47,169 in 2012.

This year, Georgia students scored better on the English (+0.1) and reading (+0.2) portions of the exam, while the math score dipped slightly (-0.3). The science score remained the same.

“I am proud to see our students’ scores gain ground on the national average on this important test,” State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge said. “But we know there is much work to be done to ensure that every student is ready for college or a career when they graduate high school. We are headed in the right direction.”

The report shows that a larger percentage of Georgia high school graduates (23 percent compared to the nation’s 26 percent) demonstrated college and career readiness this year in all four subject areas, up 1 percentage point from 2012. Readiness by subject area: English (64 percent), mathematics (38 percent), science (33 percent) and reading (43 percent).

The ACT College Readiness Benchmarks are based on the grades earned by students actively enrolled in college and help to define a high school student’s ACT performance relative to these benchmarks.

African-American and Hispanic students in Georgia also far outperformed the nation on the ACT. For African-American students, the composite score was 17.5, compared to the national average of 16.9. Hispanic students saw a composite score of 19.9, compared to the nation’s 18.8. White students in Georgia had an average composite score of 22.8, outpacing the national average 22.2.

“These numbers are very encouraging, but we must close the achievement gap between white and minority students,” Superintendent Barge said. “As we implement the Career Pathways/Clusters initiative, I believe students will see more relevance in courses they are taking and will be more engaged in their academic careers. That will translate into an even larger number of students being ready for college and careers.”

The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement test designed to measure college readiness and preparation. It includes four separate exams in English, reading, mathematics and science and an optional writing portion. The exam is scored on a scale from 0 to 36.

Coan Student Starts Math Tutoring Program

Transitioning from middle school to high school can be quite a challenge for most incoming freshmen, but Uwezo Flewellen II has taken on the challenge and exceeded the expectations of most. Uwezo is a pre-IB student at Maynard Holbrook Jackson High School and an alumni of Coan Middle School. His love for math and dedication to student achievement led him to create a math-tutoring program called “Simple Math Today,” which is offered to students at Coan Middle School.

Although math can be a challenging subject, Uwezo believes that all students can achieve success in math by incorporating a peer-to-peer modeling technique. This technique supports students with their math assignments and builds the students’ self-confidence to tackle new math skills. High school students who volunteer with Simple Math Today receive service hours for their time and talent.

Uwezo maintains a 3.5 GPA while being active in drama club, chorus, and his youth group at Impact Church. He often volunteers in the community and helps classmates with their projects as well. Uwezo plans to continue offering tutoring to After School All Stars students at Coan Middle, and he hopes to offer the program to more ASAS Atlanta sites in the future.

STEM Day 2013 at Fickett Elementary

Fickett Elementary recently held STEM Day on May 3, 2013. The event was sponsored by the UPS Foundation. During STEM Day, falculty and staff engaged the students at Fickett in a variety of STEM activities to allow them to preview some of the programs for the school’s pilot year. Students in grades 3-5 participated in engineering design projects, and K-2 students attended an in-house field trip that allowed them to understand and learn more about Fickett’s robotics program. Students were also able to view technology and science district fair projects, learn about WeDo robotics and engineering in the elementary curriculum, tour STEM labs, and work with the upper grade students on engineering projects.
