Congratulations to Atlanta Public Schools 2015 Media Specialist of the Year, Shanna Miles, from South Atlanta High School. The Georgia Library Media Association (GLMA) and Georgia Association of Instructional Technology (GAIT) co-sponsor the Georgia School Library Media Specialist of the Year award to recognize K-12 library media specialists whose service has resulted in exemplary library media programs.

The state Library Media Specialist of the Year is chosen from the district winners and will be announced at the GaETC Conference in November. The nine district winners will also be recognized and presented with awards.

Thank you Shanna Miles for your hard work and dedication. We wish you luck as you move on to the next round!

Students show-off their literacy skills at the 10th Annual APS Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

Saturday, January 31, 2015 marked Atlanta Public Schools’ 10th year participating in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl, a statewide competition with a quick-action game format that tests knowledge on selected, award-winning books. Created for students in grades four through twelve, the scholastic competition was started several years ago by former DeKalb County media specialist Helen Ruffin to encourage students to read.MAry LinHRRB

Warren Goetzel, Media Services Coordinator for Atlanta Public Schools, introduced APS schools to the bowl in 2005 and saw it as a great opportunity to engage students in reading and literature.  “The competitive nature of the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl helps drive students to read,” he stated.

Coaches and their teams spent hours reading and practicing in preparation for the reading bowl. Students were required to read books that were Georgia Children’s Book Award nominees at the elementary and middle school levels, and Georgia Peach Book Award for Teen Books nominees at the high school level.

Garden Hills Elementary reading bowl coach, Paige Lefont, stated that her team met weekly to discuss books and answer practice questions.  She also stated her student’s excitement and anticipation during each round permeated throughout the room and that they truly enjoyed testing the comprehension and attention to detail during the event.

Maya Dickson, Garden Hills Elementary reading bowl team member said, “I feel really good about Saturday’s success and I’m excited about the upcoming competition and would like to advance to the state tournament.” She also shared, “I am a really big reader and reading all of these books lets you learn about new things such as ‘Boy on the Wooden Box’ is about the Holocaust and ‘Lions on Little Rock’ is about segregation.” riversHRB

Over the years, Goetzel and his team of volunteers and media specialists have worked to grow more interest among students and they have been very successful. APS started competing in the reading bowl in 2005 with only two teams.  This year, forty-two schools competed in the APS Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl at Drew Charter School and there was overwhelming support from families, community members and staff with approximately 1,000 attendees.

hrb2Students competed in a total of six rounds. Cumulative points for all rounds determined the winners at each school level.
At the elementary school level, Garden Hills Elementary won first place and Morris Brandon Elementary won second.  At the middle school level, Sutton Middle School won first place and APS had its first ever tie-breaker as Atlanta Neighborhood Charter and Wesley International went head-to-head with Wesley International coming out on top, placing second.  Grady High placed first and Carver High School  came in second at the high school level.

These 1st and 2nd place winners of the APS Helen Ruffin Reading bowl will proceed to the Regional Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl to represent APS on February 7, 2015 @ Clayton State University.

DreamWorks director Peter Ramsey visits South Atlanta High School of Computer Animation and Design

Animation director Peter Ramsey recently spoke to the students at the South Atlanta High School of Computer Animation and Design.  Mr. Ramsey is currently directing DreamWorks Animation’s Rise of the Guardians.  Rise of the Guardians is an epic adventure that tells the story of a group of heroes – each with extraordinary abilities. The feature film is based on William Joyce’s The Guardians of Childhood series of children’s books and is set to be released on November 21, 2012.

Mr. Ramsey viewed  a demo reel of various animated works done by the students of the South Atlanta High School of Computer Animation and Design. He spoke words of praise and encouragement to the students and reflected that his early animated projects were very similar to theirs. Various clips from Rise of the Guardians were shown and he went into background as to how each scene was constructed then animated.  Mr. Ramsey stressed that the students continue to draw, get involved in as many animated projects as they could, learn and work with animation software, read and watch films of all genres to learn about story telling, storyboarding and character development. “Way before I even thought about directing, I was making my own small films. Back in the day, it was done on Super 8, 16 mm. As I was storyboarding, I was also reading a lot about film history and film technique.” His career path lead him to directing, which is a job that takes elements from his previous work experiences and has a great deal of responsibility.  “The biggest job of the director is to keep the whole team focused on the story and the direction that the story takes,” said Mr. Ramsey.

Prior to his involvement with Rise of the Guardians, Mr. Ramsey directed the hit Halloween special, Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space.  In addition to directing Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space, Ramsey served as head of story on DreamWorks Animation’s Monsters vs. Aliens and has worked as a storyboard artist on a number of live action feature films, which include Minority Report, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Cast Away, Fight Club, Men in Black, Independence Day and Batman Forever, amongst others.

Having grown-up in Crenshaw, Mr. Ramsey is a lifelong resident of Los Angeles, California.  He is a graduate of Palisades High School and attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The South Atlanta High School of Computer Animation and Design thanks Mr. Ramsey for his visit, his words of encouragement and professional insight.

South Atlanta’s Christina Wilkerson on NBC’s Education Nation

School of Computer Animation and Design at South Atlanta student Christina Wilkerson’s video entry on education innovations and reforms recently aired on a segment of MSNBC’s Education Nation 2012 Student Town Hall Meeting with Melissa Harris Perry.

Christina’s video was chosen from among hundreds of entries from high school students across the country. Her chosen video featured her recounting her scholastic learning experiences as a student.

She also voiced her recommendations for making school curriculum more engaging to today’s multi tasking students and how interactive learning can make classroom lessons fun.

NBC Learn as a teaching tool at APS

The Atlanta Public School System is considering the purchase of NBC Learn as a content – rich and innovative tool for teaching. The National Broadcasting Company (NBC) with NBC Learn, the educational arm of NBC News, has digitized thousands of stories from the NBC News Archives. More than eight decades of news archives from NBC programs such as The Today Show, Dateline NBC, NBC Nightly News, Meet the Press, and the networks of CNBC, Telemundo and MSNBC are now available on demand to APS through NBC Learn.

NBC Learn’s original videos and archival news stories are aligned with state standards and Common Core Standards. The NBC Learn videos average less than six minutes in length. This is valuable in that it gives a short digest of the instructional subject which then allows teachers and students to engage and go further in depth on the instructional subject without taking up much class time. These videos are full stories and are reported by some of the most famous journalists in television news history.

NBC Learn uses a Cue Card media player. The Cue Card player supports videos, photographs, newspaper articles, primary source documents, and other media. It also provides bibliographic information, clickable keywords, transcripts, closed caption and a citation generator.

The media assets within NBC Learn are available through internet streaming, download, stand alone resource and works with Blackboard, which allows NBC Learn users to embed videos directly into Blackboard learning systems.

B.E.S.T. Academy students to screen George Lucas’ Red Tails and discuss Tuskegee Airmen

In advance of Black History Month, B.E.S.T. Academy students will gather Friday morning to discuss the Black World War II Tuskegee Airmen and screen a new movie on the group.

Sponsored by the 100 Black Men organization, the students will participate in a discussion with actors from the new movie, “Red Tails” and Tuskegee Airmen veterans in the high school auditorium at 9 a.m. Friday, January 20 at 1890 Donald Hollowell Parkway, NW, Atlanta 30318. The Tuskegee Airmen is a group of Black men who trained at a U.S. Army airbase in Tuskegee, Alabama prior to their deployment as combat fighter pilots during the Second World War.

Following the discussion session, the students will depart for the movie screening at 11:15 a.m. The screening will be at the Camp Creek Marketplace Theater, I-285 & Camp Creek Parkway, Eastpoint, GA 30344.

Young Middle welcomes Little Kids Rock — and rocks

Big thanks to Young Middle orchestra director Erik Herndon for pointing out this article in today’s AJC, in which singer-songwriter Joshua Radin of the popular Little Kids Rock organization visited the school to share his thoughts on the value of music and help donate instruments to 30 students. (OK, it probably didn’t hurt that Mr. Herndon, a passionate advocate for Little Kids Rock, was quoted in the article, but he’s already a rock star at APS.)

As Radin walked the kids through the chord progressions, Erik Herndon, the orchestra director and guitar instructor at Jean Childs Young and an Atlanta ambassador for LKR, stood nearby with this own guitar, spiritedly playing along.
Herndon is an energetic emissary for LKR because he has seen its benefits in the classroom.
“[This program] has empowered my students to explore their creativity, self-expression and passion for music,” Herndon said. “Imagine a classroom where students are just as comfortable interpreting Alicia Keys as they are Bach or jamming out on Beatles songs before band and orchestra classes.”

It’s community partners like these that help keep our students on their path to success. Thanks to Little Kids Rock and Mr. Herndon for sharing the good news.

North Atlanta High senior honored by the National Football Foundation and Chick-fil-A Bowl

The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF), in partnership with the Chick-fil-A Bowl, announced today that Marcus Mack, a senior linebacker from North Atlanta High School in Atlanta, Ga., has been named the Play It Smart Student-Athlete of the Month for February 2011.

“It’s fitting that Marcus Mack is the winner for the month of February,” said Gary Stokan, president and CEO of the Chick-fil-A Bowl. “To honor his accomplishments during the same month he signed a letter of intent with the U.S. Naval Academy underscores the importance of our partnership with the National Football Foundation and Atlanta Public Schools.”

Mack, a senior linebacker and team captain for the Warriors, has developed an impressive resume during his career at North Atlanta High School. A volunteer with Hosea Feed the Hungry, Each One Reach One, and Help ATL, he also assists disabled students at North Atlanta. Despite his busy community schedule, he maintains a 3.6 grade point average in his school’s most challenging academic program, and this past fall he registered 77 total tackles on the field.
