Maynard Jackson and Carver to Meet on the Gridiron for the First Time

Maynard Jackson (1-2) and Carver (2-1) face each other for the first time when the Jaguars and Panthers meet Saturday, 4 p.m., at Lakewood Stadium.

The teams compete in Class AAAAA-Region 6 this season, along with Banneker (Fulton County), Decatur, Grady, Lithia Springs (Douglas County), North Springs (Fulton County) and Riverwood (Fulton County). Region competition is important because the top four teams in each region at the end of the regular season will advance to the state playoffs in November. Mays, North Atlanta and Grady face region foes this weekend as well.

TwinSports TV Brings Strong Anti-Bullying Message to Gideons Elementary Students

Twin sisters Regina and Renita Deloatch of TwinSportsTV brought their “Stop the Bullying”School Tour to Gideons Elementary School.

Twin sisters Regina and Renita Deloatch know all too well how bullying can impact the life of a young person. Their cousin, who was bullied as a child and throughout her school-age years, eventually committed suicide when the tormenting became too much for her to bear.

That personal tragedy has inspired the Virginia natives to create a 90-minute, interactive, high-energy presentation they call their “Stop the Bullying” School Tour. It has made stops in more than 150 schools nationwide since 2012. Recently, the more than 300 students at Gideons Elementary School took in the show.

“It ties in to all of our character building initiatives like Social Emotional Learning and ‘No Place for Hate,’ which we are implementing with fidelity here at Gideons,” said counselor Dr. Clara Matthews, who invited the Deloatch twins to Gideons. “This is something our kids needed to see, messages they needed to hear.”

The show promotes positive concepts like self-love, self-worth, respect and kindness while also stressing the importance of education. It uses hip-hop beats and lyrics and features real-life dramatizations to grab and hold the attention of students.

“We know how bullying can alter the course of a life,” Renita Deloatch said. “We want to touch the kids who are being bullied, but we also want to touch the kids who are doing the bullying so they can realize what they are doing is wrong. Our message is educational, but we want it to be fun and engaging as well.”

After the performance at Gideons, the twins and their other show participants were swarmed by students, wanting autographs, pictures and advice.

“Our goal is for all the kids we meet to become better people and be nicer to each other,” Regina Deloatch said. “We want them to realize their full potential and go on to graduate from college. If our message can reach just one child, and help that child keep from being bullied or make that child stop bullying other kids, we could have saved a life. And that’s our goal. We don’t want to lecture. We want to uplift.”

Finishing APStrong: Forrest Hill Academy Continues to Provide Second Chances for Students

Out of the hundreds of Atlanta Public Schools graduates who walked across the stage at the Georgia World Congress Center last week, two mattered the most to Forrest Hill Academy Principal Dr. Zawadaski Robinson.

It was the two students who, after long stints at Forrest Hill, got back on track academically and behaviorally in time to “walk” with their classmates at their respective home schools.

“That is our goal, that is our target,” said Robinson, who just completed his first year as principal after two years as the assistant principal at Forrest Hill, a non-traditional school for students in grades six through 12. Most of its approximately 300 students were sent there due to discipline infractions at their home schools.

“While they are here, we want to work with them to get them back on track,” Robinson said. “We want to help them make better decisions, so that when they return to their home school they can be successful.”

Robinson said this past school year was a very successful one due to the implementation of two key initiatives:  Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Restorative Practices.

SEL, which has been adopted by the district as a conflict resolution strategy, is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Restorative Practices is a disciplinary measure that is less punitive, and focuses on having the child examine ways in which he or she may in the future avoid situations that caused them to be assigned to Forrest Hill.

“We have to get away from the punitive mindset and move toward the restorative,” Robinson said. “It is hard work, because it is a complete culture shift not only for the students, but for parents, teachers and administrators.

“We have to get to the point where we believe that there is no such thing as a bad child, just a child who makes poor choices,” Robinson said. “To do that we have to engage the students, reinforce positivity, get them to feel good about who they are.”

Forrest Hill Academy hosted a career fair, which helped more than 30 students earn jobs with local companies and businesses.

As such, Robinson and his staff have put in place a number of activities designed to bolster student morale and help them make better decisions. For example, students who have shown progress in their classwork and behavior are allowed to visit nearby Hutchinson Elementary School to assist with reinforcing academic skills, reading stories to students, and speaking to the students about the importance of having good character.  This gives the Forrest Hill students an opportunity to serve as leaders while making a positive impact on the community.

Additionally this year, Robinson and his staff:

  • Arranged for local barbers to come to the school twice a month to give free haircuts to students who need them
  • Hosted monthly awards ceremonies for students who displayed good behavior, academic progress and near perfect attendance
  • Organized a career fair, which attracted participation from more than 15 businesses and organizations, including Chick-fil-A and Publix, which hired a combined 30 students, Primerica, Next Step Staffing, Atlanta Metropolitan State College and Atlanta Technical College
  • Worked with the Georgia House of Representatives to provide students who showed exemplary growth with official certificates of achievement
  • Established a relationship with officials at Arkansas Baptist College to help worthy students gain admission

These programs, coupled with hard work from the 55 staff members at Forrest Hill, helped the school have a very successful year, Robinson said.

“Our discipline problems plummeted and student morale is way up,” Robinson said. “We want to build on this success next year. We want to stay focused on our goal of presenting these students with viable, positive options in order to make a difference in their lives.”

A strong school system needs strong school leaders, and Atlanta Public Schools has brought back an initiative designed to discover and nurture leaders from within.

Dr. Dickey personally spoke with a number of attendees at the Aspiring Assistant Principal Reception.

On Monday, May 23, the district held an Aspiring Assistant Principal Reception at the offices of community partner Nelson Mullins in Atlantic Station. The event was hosted by Chief Schools Officer Dr. Donyall D. Dickey, who was told by a veteran APS principal that it had been 30 years since the district staged such an event.

But Dr. Dickey, who was assisted by Deputy Chief Human Resources Officer Skye Duckett, plans to make the Aspiring Assistant Principal Reception an annual event. It is designed to help educators in the district discover the vision for the assistant principal position in APS, develop a career path to becoming an assistant principal, and decide if it is the best career choice. Nearly 200 educators attended the event.

Building and improvement projects in all nine Atlanta Public Schools clusters are part of the spending plan for the $546 million that could result from the renewal of a proposed Educational Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (E-SPLOST).

The renewal of this one-penny sales tax will be on the ballot during the General Primary Election, Tuesday, May 24. The E-SPLOST would fund major construction projects, renovate school buildings, provide state-of-the-art technology, upgrade athletic fields, demolish dilapidated structures, relieve overcrowding in some schools, pay for new school buses, improve safety and security, and provide better infrastructure systems like heating and air.Anticipated Expenditures graphic“Our school system — in partnership with the taxpayers of Atlanta — has made tremendous investments in our schools that have played important roles in community revitalization efforts across this city. APS joins Decatur City Schools, DeKalb County Schools and Fulton County Schools on the        May 24th E-SPLOST referenda. The expiring E-SPLOST, approved by Atlanta, Fulton and DeKalb voters in 2011, is projected to raise approximately $442 million for Atlanta Public Schools, resulting in the completion of major renovation projects in 16 schools, significant HVAC system upgrades in 17 facilities. The early voting period, which began May 2 at specific locations, will conclude today.

APS to Host First-Ever High School All-Star Baseball Classic at Turner Field, Presented by L.E.A.D.

Atlanta Public Schools has a long and storied athletic history, and that includes baseball. Now APS will honor its baseball tradition by hosting the first high school all-star baseball game in the district’s history.

The Atlanta Public Schools All-Star Baseball Classic, presented by L.E.A.D., will showcase nearly 50 of the top baseball student athletes in metro Atlanta from 10 APS high schools:  B.E.S.T. Academy, George Washington Carver, Frederick Douglass, Henry W. Grady, Maynard H. Jackson, Benjamin E. Mays, North Atlanta, South Atlanta, D.M. Therrell and Booker T. Washington.

Adding to the significance of the event, the game – scheduled for Tuesday, May 17, 11 a.m. – will be held at Turner Field. The APS All-Stars practiced together from 10 a.m. to noon, on Saturday, May 7 at Jackson High School. APS All-Star Baseball logo

Along with permitting the APS All-Star Baseball Classic to be played at Turner Field, the Atlanta Braves will present the All-Stars and their coaches to Braves Country on May 12th during an on-field presentation before the Braves face off against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The inaugural game represents the vision of C.J. Stewart, who grew up in one of Atlanta’s most dangerous housing projects, Hollywood Court, dreaming of becoming a professional baseball player. After starring at DeKalb College (now Georgia Perimeter College), he was signed by the Chicago Cubs organization. After his playing days ended, Stewart became a baseball instructor and started L.E.A.D., which stands for “Launch, Expose, Advise, Direct.” The mission of the non-profit organization is to create positive outcomes for at-risk, minority, inner-city youth by leveraging the relationship between education, athletics and service.

Through year-round programming, Stewart is providing deserving inner-city youth with a pathway to high school graduation, college access and career opportunities. L.E.A.D. is developing a fraternity of youth called Ambassadors: college bound, civically engaged student-athletes who are prepared to be positive change agents in their communities and world.

“This inaugural All-Star Game will serve as an inspirational catalyst to first, unite student-athletes from different schools and position them to use the game they love to lead Atlanta and to lead the world,” said Stewart, who attended elementary school in APS. “Atlanta needs young men who will grow up to lead this city and baseball helps develop those leaders. We are excited about providing this platform for leadership through the All-Star game via our partnership with APS.”

Stewart noted that several notable Atlanta leaders played baseball while in high school in APS. The list includes:

  • Courtney D. English – Atlanta Board of Education Chair
  • Andre Dickens – Atlanta City Councilman
  • Kwanzaa Hall – Atlanta City Councilman
  • Johnny Isakson – United States Senator
  • Ceasar Mitchell – Atlanta City Council President
  • Othello “Chico” Renfroe – Negro League Legend
  • Donn Clendenon – Major League Baseball World Series

“Baseball changed my life,” English said. “Teamwork, discipline, work ethic, sportsmanship are all skills I use every day as chairman of the Atlanta Board of Education, and I learned them all on the baseball field. The chance to play in a citywide all-star game creates a level of camaraderie and pride between students that is simply invaluable. L.E.A.D. is a part of APS’ solution to create choice-filled lived for our students.”

Senator Isakson said, “I was a catcher on my high school baseball team, and it helped prepare me for public service in the Georgia state legislature and the U.S. Congress by teaching me to build trust with members of my team. Teamwork and building personal relationships are important factors for success in life, whatever your path. I would have been honored to participate in an All-Star game. It’s great to get to compete together with great athletes from other teams and other schools.”

Spring Sports Teams Making a Run at State Championships

The school year is winding down, but spring sports competition in Atlanta Public Schools is red hot as several teams are making a run at a state championship.

Tennis
The Henry W. Grady boys team has advanced to the third round of the state playoffs.

Last week the Knights, the No. 3 seed from Region 6, Class AAAA, travelled north to Elijay and defeated Gilmer County, the No. 2 seed from Region 7, by a score of 3-1. (Tennis competitions feature five matches. The top three singles players from each team play each other, as well as the top two doubles duos.) The match against Gilmer County was called early.  Then Grady travelled south to Jesup Monday and shut out Wayne County, the Region 3 champions, 5-0.

The Knights will face either North Oconee, the Region 8 champions, or Spauding, the No. 2 seed from Region 4, later this week. Grady has been led all season by singles players Josh Wolfe, Alex Lepik and Matthew Wood, and the doubles teams of Chase Masri and Kyle Mulholland, and Robert Mobley and Randall Schwartz.


Baseball
After clinching the Region 6, Class AAAAA title last week, Benjamin E. Mays will host Kell from Marietta, beginning Friday at 5 p.m., in the first round of the Georgia High School Association state playoffs. (Baseball playoffs are a best-of-three series, with a double-header played usually on the first day of the series.) The Raiders finished the regular season with a record of 19-2, the best in school history, and enter the state Class AAAAA playoffs as a No. 1 seed from Region 6. Kell (18-8) is the No. 4 seed from Region 7.
Soccer
Grady, Maynard H. Jackson and North Atlanta have both their boys and girls teams in the state playoffs.

The North Atlanta girls (15-3-1) are the Region 7, Class AAAAA champions and have won their last four consecutive games by a combined score of 18-1. They will host Southwest Dekalb (5-5), the No. 4 seed from Region 6, Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Warriors’ boys team (9-4-1), the No. 4 seed from Region 7, Class AAAAA, took on Region 6 champion Dunwoody (11-6-1) on Tuesday, at Dunwoody.

The Grady boys (12-3-1) are the No. 2 seed from Region 6, Class AAAA and hosted Cartersville (13-4-1), Tuesday. The Grady girls (10-5-2) are the No. 3 seed from Region 6, Class AAAA and travelled to Cartersville (10-7) on Tuesday to take on the Purple Hurricanes.

The Jackson girls (10-4), the No. 4 seed from Region 4, Class AAA, travelled south Tuesday to take on Savannah Arts Academy (13-1-1), the Region 1, Class AAA champions. The Jaguar boys (6-5), also the No. 4 seed from Region 4, faced Savannah Arts Academy (15-3), following the girls game. The SAA boys are the Region 1, Class AAA champs.
Track
All APS track teams will be competing in sectional meets on Saturday, with the top 8 finishers in each event advancing to the state meets. The girls’ state meet will be May 5-7 in Albany, the boys’ will be May 12-14 in Jefferson. Here is the lineup for Saturday’s sectional meets (girls and boys run at the same sites):

Beecher Hills Elementary Using New Initiative to Increase Parental Involvement, Student Achievement

As schools throughout the district administer various tests this spring designed to measure student growth, Beecher Hills Elementary School hopes a new initiative implemented this year will boost test scores the way it has improved parental involvement.

The Academic Parent-Teacher Team (APTT) concept is an innovative program designed to build and enhance school-family partnerships. APTT operates from the premise that schools function best when families and teachers work collaboratively to help maximize student learning in the classroom and at home. The program was created by WestEd, a non-profit youth education group that is a longtime partner of Atlanta Public Schools.

The Georgia Department of Education has partnered with WestEd to train and support Title I schools in the APTT concept. Beecher Hills is one of just 33 schools statewide, and the only Atlanta Public School, implementing the APTT concept. This summer, Beecher Hills teachers will train teachers at Heritage Academy Elementary on using the APTT concept, which will be implemented at that school starting in the fall.

The APTT model supplements the efforts of traditional parent conferences with whole-class meetings where parents learn exactly where their child is in comparison to academic standards, where their child needs to be by the end of the school year, and how they can help support their child’s learning outside of the classroom.

Beecher Hills students spend time doing arts and crafts and other activities during APTT meetings.

Additionally, at the beginning of the school year, grade-level teams select a critical, grade-specific standard and then focus their quarterly APTT meetings on concepts that will help students master the standard. During the APTT meetings, parents sit in their child’s chair in the classroom and participate in the same learning activities. Also, parents are shown how their child is progressing in class compared to the other students.

“It lets parents see exactly what their children are learning and how they are learning,” said Beecher Hills Principal Crystal Jones, who noted that parental involvement has grown exponentially with the implementation of APTT. Last year, about 30 percent of the school’s parents participated regularly in school activities. This year that number has increased to over 70 percent.

Beecher Elementary students spend time playing in a bounce house and other physical activities during APTT meetings.

While parents are in the classrooms during APTT meetings, students rotate through various activity stations set up throughout the school.  The stations feature arts and crafts, snacks, movies and a play room featuring various physical activities, such as a bounce house and jump rope station.

“The kids love it because all of the activities are a lot of fun,” Jones said. “The parents love it because they can experience what their child is learning and see the progress their child is making. We think it has made a difference in our school and we hope our test scores reflect that.”

APS JROTC to Celebrate 100 Years of Army ROTC Through Gifts from Military Organizations

Thanks to the generosity of two military organizations, 100 cadets from the Atlanta Public Schools Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) will get the opportunity to make history and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Army JROTC program at the same time.

The Atlanta Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and the West Point Society of Atlanta have each donated $550 to the APS JROTC, which will pay for charter buses to transport 100 APS cadets to Fort Benning, Ga., near Columbus, on April 23 – the day the 100th anniversary of the Army JROTC program will be celebrated. On that day, the cadets will join military personnel from around the world in a 5K run, in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest 5K run.

“There will be 5K runs on bases around the world,” said Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Robert W. Rooker, Director of the AJC JROTC. “It will be great for our students to take part in something historic like this. We are extremely grateful to the Atlanta Chapter of MOAA and the West Point Society of Atlanta for allowing our students to have this opportunity.”

While at Fort Benning, the APS cadets will tour the National Infantry Museum, which is located on the base.

Mays Baseball Team to Participate in National Tournament, Saturday

The Benjamin E. Mays baseball team has already demonstrated that it is one of the best in Georgia. Now the Raiders have the opportunity to show the nation.

Mays has been invited to match up against some of the best teams in the nation during a national tournament, beginning Saturday morning. The Raiders will face the Henry Clay Blue Devils from Lexington, Ky., in the Rawlings Select Classic, a 16-team event being held at the LakePoint Sports Complex in Emerson, Ga. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.

This is the first time an Atlanta Public School team has been invited to the prestigious tournament. Mays earned an invitation through its stellar play thus far this season. The Raiders are 14-1 and are in first place and undefeated (10-0) in their region, Class AAAAA-Region 6. Mays, coached by Reginald Austin, has won 12 consecutive games.

Other top teams in the tournament, which will culminate with a championship game Saturday evening, include Archbishop Moeller of Cincinnati, Morgan Park of Chicago, and T.L. Hanna of Anderson, S.C. Mays and Valdosta High School will represent Georgia. Tickets are $5.
