Today, October 21, Atlanta Public Schools (APS) joins schools across the state in celebrating Georgia Bus Driver and Monitor Appreciation Day—a day dedicated to recognizing the unsung heroes who transport students safely to and from school each day.
For nearly three decades, APS school bus driver Trenton Dale has devoted himself to ensuring that APS students not only reach their destinations safely, but also feel supported and cared for along the way.
A five-time recipient of the APS Elite designation, which honors drivers for perfect attendance, accident-free records, and thorough daily vehicle checks, Dale has set the standard for his exceptional service to the district.
For the past 27 years, he has been a familiar face at Morris Brandon Elementary School and North Atlanta High School, forming bonds with generations of students and their families.
“The experience of providing a safe ride to and from school is what I enjoy the most about my job,” Dale said. “Getting to know the kids, watching the kids grow from pre-K to high school, and building relationships with their families has been incredibly fulfilling.”
Dale’s journey as a bus driver began with a desire to serve as a mentor and protector for children. After earning his Commercial Driver’s License, he embraced the opportunity to give back to his community.

Over the years, Dale has become a trusted figure, known not only for his professional skills but also for the care and dedication he shows his passengers. The most memorable trips he’s taken with students have ranged from an adventurous excursion through the mountains with Boy Scouts of America to overnight trips for high school football teams.
“The most fun trip I ever got to take was for the Boy Scouts when we went to Eagle’s Landing for a weekend. It was such a scenic route through the mountains,” Dale said.
Dale is excited about the opening of the new APS Northwest Transportation Center, a 10.4-acre facility that will house the district’s fleet of buses. The center will be closer to his home and the routes he services.
“It’s going to be a new adventure and change. Somewhere we can call a stable home. I’m looking forward to seeing the new base open,” Dale said.
As APS celebrates Georgia Bus Driver and Monitor Appreciation Day, Dale remains humble about his role in the lives of so many students.
“I cherish my fellow bus drivers,” Dale said. “They are some of the safest, kindest people I’ve been around. They care deeply about the kids, and they love their jobs.”
With plans to continue driving until at least 2028, Dale is excited to continue serving his community, APS students, and their families.
“Working for the district has been an adventure. It’s a great place to earn a living and make connections with the community. I plan to be here until retirement, but who knows—I may stay longer.”
On this special day of recognition, we celebrate Dale and all the bus drivers and monitors who make a difference every day. Their dedication, hard work, and care make the wheels of education turn, ensuring students have a safe, supportive journey to and from school. Join us in celebrating these heroes by sharing words of gratitude with them this week!
