The Maynard Jackson girls will host the Griffin Bears in the Georgia High Schools Association basketball quarterfinals, Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Four Atlanta Public Schools (APS) basketball teams – two boys and two girls – are still alive in the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) state basketball playoffs, and will compete in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday.

The Maynard Jackson girls (23-2) are still in the hunt to return to the Class AAAAA title game after defeating Wayne County, the No. 3 seed from Region 2, 55-41, last Wednesday. The Jaguars are the only APS team that will host its quarterfinal game, as Griffin (Griffin-Spaulding County), the top seed from Class AAAAA-Region 3, will visit on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Maynard Jackson won a coin toss that was held to decide which team would host the game because both are region champions.

The Carver boys (17-13) stayed red hot and won their sixth consecutive game last Thursday, defeating Dutchtown (Henry County) in the second round, 66-57. The Panthers will play at Fayette County, the No. 1 seed from Class AAAAA-Region 3, at 7 p.m., in Wednesday’s quarterfinal after losing the coin toss.

The South Atlanta boys (26-1) are still steamrolling through the post season after taking down Butler (Richmond County), 82-70, last Thursday. The Hornets lost their coin toss as well and will travel to Washington County, the No. 1 seed from Class AA-Region 3, for their quarterfinal game at 7 p.m.

The Mays girls (19-9) destroyed Greenbriar (Columbia County), 81-28 on Wednesday. The Raiders will hit to road to face Winder-Barrow (Barrow County), the Class AAAAAA-Region 8 champion, in the quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m.

Unfortunately, the season came to an end last Wednesday for two APS teams:

The Douglass girls (18-8) were defeated by Laney (Richmond County), the Region 4 champs, 76-61, while the South Atlanta girls (12-12) lost to Bryan County, the top seed from Region 2, 72-44.
