In observance of the upcoming Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday Jan. 19, fourth and fifth-grade students and Beta Club students from Continental Colony Elementary School went on a field trip to The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change Jan. 13. The students attended the “Choose Nonviolence: NOW! No Other Way!” program that challenges students to choose nonviolence. The students also participated in a dialogue session where they heard personal and humorous stories about the life of Dr. and Mrs. King from their daughter Dr. Bernice King and her aunt Naomi King. Dr. Bernice King, who is the CEO of The King Center, shared with the students that she did not understand how prominent her father was until she was 16 years old and watched a video about his life. She shared details about her family’s upbringing, her father’s matriculation at Morehouse College. Dr. King encouraged the students to “be the best you can be,” and not to compare themselves to other people.

The students toured the King home, the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church and visited the Freedom Pool where both Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King are buried. Each student received a “I choose nonviolence” wristband.
