It takes more than good grades to be accepted into one of the nation’s esteemed service academies.
High school graduates who aspire to become a cadet or midshipman must also demonstrate qualities of leadership and community involvement. This year three Atlanta Public Schools graduates have proven they have ‘the right stuff.’
2014 graduates from Grady and Therrell High Schools passed stringent requirements to join the elite groups at the United States Naval and Military Academy.
Each year, thousands apply for admission into the USMA at West Point. The few selected for the exceptional honor receive paid tuition, room, board and expenses.
Therrell’s Isabella Minter plans to double major in Philosophy and Legal Studies at West Point.
Isabella Minter accepted her diploma Sunday May 25, 2014 as valedictorian of Therrell School of Law, Government and Public Policy. She plans to attend the United States Military Academy’s Preparatory School at West Point. She intends to double major in Philosophy and Legal Studies. Her career goal is to become a Judge Advocate General Attorney for the United States Army or Legal Analyst for a major news network.
Grady graduate Tia Borrego is also headed to the United States Military Academy at West Point in New York. Ms. Borrego is a member of Grady High School’s award-winning Army JROTC Unit.
The mission outlined on West Point’s website is to “educate, train and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the nation as an officer in the United States Army.”
West Point is ranked number seven overall on Forbes’ Top Colleges List.
The equally prestigious United States Naval Academy also ranks high and will receive a recent APS graduate. U.S. News & World Report lists USNA as the nation’s top public school. That’s where Grady graduate Oscar Eugene Emerson Prioleau is headed. A Navy representative presented Prioleau with his offer to attend the Naval Academy Preparatory School during Grady’s graduation on May 24, 2014. The ten month program is followed by four years at the U.S. Naval Academy where graduates receive a Bachelor of Science degree.
Atlanta Public Schools congratulates the accomplishments of these cadets and their peers of the class of 2014.
