Coan partners with CFY and gives away computers to students

This year, Coan Middle School is partnering with CFY to provide support to families, educators, and leadership in meeting the goals of Common Core and ensuring college readiness. Each sixth grader at Coan was offered the opportunity to receive a free desktop computer with educational programs, including the Microsoft Office Suite.

Students were required to attend a three-hour workshop with an adult family member to learn about the software and computer. CFY also provided families with information on acquiring inexpensive internet access, and an 800 number for technical support.

Teachers and students at Coan will be offered training throughout the year on software and online programs that help students achieve their academic goals.  In addition, teachers are able to extend students’ learning beyond the traditional classroom and reach out to students at home using various technology tools.

CFY hopes that the computers can also support the Jackson cluster’s goal of increasing parent involvement and the use of the parent portal. Coan hopes that by engaging parents and students in the workshop, parents will feel more comfortable helping their students with their schoolwork, and they will have a way to access the parent portal to stay informed about their child’s progress.
