Recently, Gary Tuchman, CNN news correspondent for the Anderson Cooper 360 show, taught Miriam Archibong’s history students at the New Schools of Carver at the High School of Technology (SOT). Mr. Tuchman, introduced by SOT junior D’Orrin Collins, opened his lesson by outlining key reasons why it is important to study history. Mr. Tuchman brought his sentiments to life by providing vivid examples of ways his job has allowed him to capture and share significant moments from our historical fabric. For example, Mr. Tuchman shared a clip from his news report about the orphaned children in Haiti.
What was most fascinating about the report was its global exposure. Because the report was viewed all over the world it provided a unique opportunity for a child, orphaned by the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, to be reunited with her adopted mom.
In essence, Mr. Tuchman showed the children the far reaching impact and significance of news coverage in the lives of everyday people. “It was so cool to have a celebrity guest in our classroom,” said SOT junior Kayron White. Mr. Tuchman, joined by a hand full of other celebrities and local leaders, served as an instructor through his involvement with Teach For America’s (TFA) Promise Week. The purpose of Promise Week was to inspire support around TFA’s commitment to recruit and develop individuals who will make a two year commitment to teach in high need schools.
