APS Announces the Atlanta Urban Teacher Residency Program – Become a Teacher Today

If you have ever thought about making a difference and are passionate about urban youth, the Atlanta Urban Teacher Residency (AUTR) may be the program for you.  AUTR will prepare you to teach in Atlanta Public Schools to impact the lives of children in the city of Atlanta.  As a resident in the first AUTR cohort you will participate in a groundbreaking program focused on recruiting, preparing and retaining secondary mathematics teachers in Atlanta Public Schools. 

Our mission is to create a pipeline of highly effective secondary teachers in the Atlanta Public School’s areas of greatest need – math, science, reading, and special education – through an Urban Teacher Residency.

As APS seeks to ensure that there is an effective teacher in every classroom, AUTR will prepare an elite cadre of teachers to go into high needs schools.  AUTR has identified master teachers to train and support residents as they earn their master’s degree and develop their skills as highly effective classroom teachers.

AUTR is looking for candidates that:

• have a degree in Mathematics or a related field; OR
• can demonstrate a strong proficiency in mathematics through coursework or experience.

No previous coursework in education or teaching experience is required. However, candidates must:

• Have a Bachelor’s degree (conferred by June 1, 2012)
• Have an undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or higher
• Meet Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) testing requirements
• Have U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status

Bachelor’s Degree
Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree conferred by the start of the program to be eligible to apply for the 2012-2013 residency program.

Candidates who received credit from foreign universities must have their transcripts evaluated by a foreign credential evaluation agency. When requesting an evaluation, candidates should ensure that the evaluating agency specifically states that the individual has received the U.S. equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in his/her subject area (if applicable) AND provides a full listing of coursework. If invited to Selection Day, candidates must submit evaluations of any foreign transcripts. A decision will not be made regarding a candidate’s final status unless foreign transcript evaluations have been received.

2.75 GPA or Higher
Without exception, individuals must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher in their undergraduate coursework from an accredited college or university. Candidates with a GPA below a 3.0 will have the opportunity in the online application to address any issues that may be relevant to their academic performance.

Candidates must provide at least one official from each college or university attended.

GaPSC Testing Requirements 
Candidates must take and pass the GACE Basic Skills Assessment (All three parts: Reading, Writing and Math) and GACE Mathematics Assessment. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply to the Atlanta Urban Teacher Residency even if they have not yet taken these exams. However, admission to the program is contingent upon passage of required tests, and passing scores must be on file with AUTR office by April 27, 2012

U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident Status
All applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents to be eligible for the program.
