APS celebrates Inclusive Schools Week with creative, fun activities

UPDATE: Tony Muckle, operations and maintenance manager for School Reform Team (SRT) 1, celebrated Inclusive Schools Week by inviting 37 APS Pre-kindergarten general and inclusion education students housed at John F. Kennedy Middle School to decorate the office holiday tree with their paper ornaments. Read more here.

UPDATE: Students from Kennedy Middle School’s Program for Exceptional Children (PEC) and general-education students got to know each other a little better on the court as they participated in physical-education activities together during Inclusive Schools Week. Seven of the more severely disabled students had fun bowling, playing volleyball and trying baseball in the gym, assisted by sixth- and eighth-grade students. Read more here.

UPDATE: For Burgess-Peterson Academy’s Program for Exceptional Children teacher Monetia Hollie, the timing could not have been more perfect. She was thrilled to learn that Inclusive Schools Week would occur during the same week she had planned a field trip to celebrate the definition of inclusion. Check out that field trip to Sensations TheraFun here.

Students and staff from Cleveland Avenue Elementary School’s Program for Exceptional Children kicked off Inclusive Schools Week (Dec. 6-10) by releasing blue and white balloons in front of their school. It’s just one of several district events this week, and we’ll have updates from other individual schools as the information comes in.

Other activities Cleveland Avenue planned for the week include daily morning announcements by their Junior Beta Club members sharing a celebrity who has been diagnosed with a disability and an inclusion parent workshop with parents reading to students. The school will end the week Friday with a student essay/poetry contest with the theme “What Inclusion/Diversity means to me.”
