Walter Leonard Parks Middle School students participated in a program Friday sponsored by the Haitian-American Women-Children Health and Educational Services, Inc. (HAWCHES, INC.). Foundation Director Gabriel Benoit held an open-forum during a school-wide program in which he detailed the devastation of the earthquake and how it has impacted the life of Haitian people. Benoit discussed his early life in Haiti and how the lives of people currently living in Haiti have been significantly changed because of the earthquake. Students were shown a PowerPoint presentation and also viewed a short videotape that chronicled the aftermath of the earthquake. Students also read poems and sung songs in honor of Haitians people who lost their lives during this horrific event.
Students have started collecting money from people in the Pittsburgh community for the Red Cross organization. Students have also started to create a series of art projects that depict the destruction of the earthquake. Students share daily via the morning announcement poems and essay that they have written on the topic “Hope for Haiti Now.” Parks students plan to raise money for the earthquake victims until the end of the month of February. With both teachers and student support the Parks’ family plan to raise a substantial amount of money that can will support the flight of the Haitian people.
