APS joined the nation in celebrating healthy lunch choices during National School Lunch Week with the theme, āHealthy International Mealsā from OctoberĀ 15-18.Ā Celebrity chefs and volunteer chefs visitedĀ 12 APS schools from October 15-18 to promote the benefits of healthy school lunches, and celebrate the flavors, ingredients, and culture of various countries throughout the world.
During National School Lunch Week, all school cafeterias served Asian, Mexican, Caribbean, and Italian foods. Chef Nicole Banks-Bonilla,from the Grand Hyatt Atlanta in Buckhead, visited Mays High SchoolĀ whileĀ Chef Miguel Francisco visited Hutchinson Elementary School.Ā Ā Chef Jeremy Ruthuku visited Young Middle School, and Chef Pratik Jani from Masala Fresh visited Garden Hills Elementary.









Students completed an āInclusion Chainā that hung through the hallways and participated in a Poem and Picture Contest by drawing a picture using the theme āGreat Things Happen in Inclusive Schools.āOn Friday, a guest speaker named Leslie Ostrander shared her story with the students. Leslie was 4 years old when she was in a life-altering car accident that left her paralyzed from the waist-down and impaired the mobility of her hands. Leslie never let her physical disabilities limit her and has achieved great accomplishments. She was named Miss Congeniality in the 1993 Miss Columbus pageant and wrote a book called āIn His Handsā in 2008. She is a wife and mother, has a speaking career, and is a designer of accessible housing for Nationwide Homes. āI donāt want to be just a good story,ā Leslie says. āI want to be motivation where they can take elements of my presentation into their everyday life and use it.ā
