Walter F. White Elementary certified as a No Place for Hate school

Walter F. White Elementary learned Monday that it has been officially certified as a No Place for Hate School by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the group announced in a press release. The announcement came in a Banner Certification Program in which Hollande Levinson, ADL education director, presented a banner to White guidance counselor Dale W. Tate. Tate also serves as the guidance counselor for F.L. Stanton, which also has received No Place for Hate certification.

There’s not one but two HealthMPowers honorees at APS!

About a month ago we noted how Parkside Elementary teacher Armelia Braddy and “two other physical educators” as three Georgia P.E. teachers were honored by HealthMPowers for promoting healthy behaviors and environments. Which is all very well and good except we didn’t add that one of the other two teachers, Julie Chartier, was also from APS! Ms. Chartier teaches at White Elementary, and yes, we’re proud of her, too! (OK, we’re also proud of Union Point Elementary’s Lisa Brown, too!)

Fund for Teachers: What they’re doing this summer

Not to get all nostalgic or anything, but when we started Talk Up APS toward the end of last summer, one of the first things we did was serve up a series of essays from the Atlanta Fund for Teachers  (through the Atlanta Education Fund) winners who wrote about their summer experiences. The essays were a huge hit, and underscored how our APS teachers are at their best when they’re in a constant state of professional development.

So we’re excited to end the 2009-10 school year and look toward the summer with this look at what this year’s crop of Atlanta Fund for Teachers recipients will be doing this summer. We’ll check back in with them from time to time, and get their impressions on what we’re sure will be enriching and fun adventures. (Check out this link for a sampling of those essays.)

F.L. Stanton and White elementary schools join APS efforts to help Haiti

Walter White and Frank L. Stanton elementary school students and staff and gotten into the help for Haiti. At White, students and staff collected items by grade levels and the administration. The school was able to donate many needed supplies. Among the supplies were toiletry items, water, medical supplies, baby food and other baby needs. Students helped place boxes of items in our cars and we delivered them to a drop off location sponsored by The Haitian Alliance, Inc. It was a very rewarding experience for all of the students and faculty.

At Stanton, staff and students focused on donating cases of bottled water. “After we began the collection, we were told by the agency we were intending to make our donation that water was to costly to deliver,” said Ms. Dale W. Tate, guidance counselor for both schools. “We immediately changed our direction and students began collecting money to be donated to the Red Cross.” Proceeds go to the Hope for Haiti Project.

“It was an awesome experience,” Ms. Tate continued. ” Students were very eager to contribute; they also assisted in decorating the boxes where we collected the items.   There was never a question about why we were helping.  They simply knew there were people who came across hard times and needed our immediate attention. We had the opportunity to help neighbors that were in desperate need and we knew we had to do it generously and quickly.”

APS salutes school achievements with Convocation 2009

The Atlanta Public Schools celebrated elementary, middle and high schools that achieved at least 70 percent of their performance targets today during the APS Convocation 2009 at the Georgia International Convention Center. A total of 26 APS schools were recognized during today’s event.

Specific performance targets for each APS school are set at the beginning of each school year. The targets involve quantifiable measures, including attendance, test scores, enrollment in rigorous academic courses and participation in extracurricular activities during the 2008-09 school year.

Schools achieving 90 to 99 percent of their targets include: Peyton Forest and West Manor elementary schools; Inman Middle School; Carver School of the Arts and Carver Early College High School. Those schools achieving 80 to 89 percent of their targets include: Benteen, Blalock, Garden Hills, Jackson, Morningside and F.L. Stanton elementary schools; Turner Middle School; and South Atlanta High School of Leadership and Economic Empowerment. Schools achieving 70 to 79 percent of their targets include: Capitol View, Cascade, Deerwood, Hope, Humphries, Mary Lin, Perkerson, Rivers, Venetian Hills and White elementary schools; Bunche and Sutton middle schools; and Therrell School of Business & Entrepreneurship High School.

“Congratulations to the 26 schools that made at least 70 percent of their targets for 2008-2009!” said APS Superintendent Dr. Beverly L. Hall. “As we celebrate our growing achievements today, I ask that you also stay focused on the future. Every day, more school districts are looking to APS as a model. People around the country know that something significant is happening here in Atlanta.”

Principals and staff assigned to schools that meet at least 70 percent of their performance targets receive financial incentives.

Two APS teachers get surprise visits from OfficeMax

Two teachers in the Atlanta Public Schools system got the most pleasant surprise of the new school year on Tuesday when OfficeMax provided each with $1,000 worth of supplies for the classrooms. White Elementary‘s Benita Edwards and Parkside Elementary‘s Ronnie Thomas had been nominated by their principals in the annual “A Day Made Better” sponsored by OfficeMax. Edwards (pictured above, in purple sweater) is a fifth grade reading and ELA teacher at White who has been teaching for six years in APS.  Last year she received Georgia Schools Superintendent Kathy Cox’s Award for Improvement in 5th Grade Reading.

In this program, schools across the nation receive $1 million worth of supplies in the form of basic things like paper all the way to printers and digital cameras. Some 1,000 teachers received the gift Tuesday.

Two APS teachers to be surprised with free school supplies on Oct. 6

Two Atlanta Public Schools elementary school teachers have been selected to receive more than $1,000 in classroom supplies as part of the annual “A Day Made Better” program by OfficeMax on Oct. 6.
 
White and Parkside elementary schools teachers were nominated by their principals, and are among more than 1,000 educators at schools across the country selected for the program, which distributes $1 million in school supplies.
 
Local OfficeMax employees will surprise the teachers at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 6.  News media representatives planning to cover the event should arrive at the schools no later than 9:30 a.m.
 
White Elementary School is located at 1890 Detroit Ave., NW, Atlanta 30314.
 
Parkside Elementary School is located at 685 Mercer St., SE, Atlanta 30312

Office Depot gets APS’ back with Thursday’s Back-to-School Backpack Celebration

Atlanta Public Schools students will get a satchel full of support with the Office Depot Foundation’s “Back to School Backpack Celebration,” which will spread 750 backpacks to students throughout the system. The event will held on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 4 p.m. at the Office Depot at 2625 Piedmont Road. NASCAR star Tony Stewart will be on hand for the announcement of the initiative that sends out 4,000 backpacks to non-profits and schools around Atlanta.

“The Office Depot Foundation believes strongly that we are helping children to build self-confidence, boost self-esteem and achieve greater success in the classroom — all a a result of being well prepared for school, “said Foundation President Mary Wong in a press release Tuesday. “We are extremely pleased to be able to donate our 2 millionth backpack at a time when so many children and families are dealing with the impace of the economic downturn.”

Representatives from APS will include Dr. Carolyn Hart, special assistant to the deputy superintendent of instruction, and Walter F. White Elementary Parent Liaison Carey Saxton.
