The 2024 Democracy Fest Tour made stops at three Atlanta Public Schools (APS) high schools to motivate voting-eligible students to register to vote before the upcoming election.
Democracy Fest stopped by Maynard Jackson High School, Benjamin E. Mays High School, and Douglass High School with community partners, special guests, and a Wild N’ Out-style game show to energize and inform students about available resources and important deadlines.
“It’s very important that our students know that their voice matters,” Booker T. Washington principal William Wade said. “We wrap some things around them that they love to do, then we can squeeze that voting message in there, and that makes them pay attention to it. They won’t forget this when they become 17 ½ and can register to vote.”
The APS Student Advisory Council members, consisting of student leaders from across the district, helped spread the message about voter registration. Atlanta mayor Andre Dickens stopped by his alma mater, Mays High School, to encourage the students to register and vote. He also joined the students for a few rounds of the Democracy Fest game show.
“This is a huge win for APS as a whole,” Mays High School principal Ramon Garner said. “It’s super exciting to see all the kids come together and all the schools coming together to have fun, but the foundation of everything we’re doing is to promote their right to vote.”
The deadline to register to vote for the upcoming election is October 7, 2024. Early voting in Georgia is from October 15 – November 1, 2024, and Election Day is November 5, 2024.
