Toomer Elementary joins NASCAR’s Denny Hamlin, FedEx and the Red Cross in the ‘Race to Prepare’

NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin, FedEx, and the Atlanta Red Cross hosted “Race to Prepare” at Toomer Elementary School to teach students that it’s never too early to learn how to prepare for emergencies and disasters in their own community. “September is National Preparedness Month, and this is an excellent way for children to pass on this important information to their families and grow a safer community,” said Ruben Brown, media relations specialist for the Atlanta Red Cross.

Hamlin (pictured above, top right) encouraged students to share what they learned about hurricanes and emergency preparedness with their family and friends. Each student packed their own emergency preparedness kit to take home which included batteries, gloves, a flashlight, personal hygiene products, a coloring book and crayons, and a first aid kit.

GE’s John Rice reads up on Toomer Elementary

GE Vice Chairman John Rice spent the morning at Toomer Elementary School with Caitlin Hickey‘s kindergarten class learning all about the ritual of their daily morning meeting and listening to them count in Mandarin to showcase Toomer’s participation in the Confucius Institute. “I feel so glad that I finally got a chance to meet you,” he told the kindergarteners. Rice is personally sponsoring Teach for America training, over a two-year period, for first-year teacher Hickey.

“I just think that public education is so important,” Rice said. “Teach for America brings bright people to the classroom and I am feeding the next generation of public-school advocates.” Rice shared his memories when his own two sons, now in college, were in kindergarten. “They were smart just like you, but you are so much smarter because they didn’t learn Mandarin when they were in kindergarten.” Also pictured is Toomer Principal Nicole Evans Jones.

Toomer Elementary teacher joins mammal research team with Earthwatch Institute

Megan Dosmann, a first-grade teacher at Toomer Elementary School, joined an Earthwatch Institute research team for a 13-day expedition in Nova Scotia to help scientists understand how the mammals of Nova Scotia are affected by climate change. Megan’s expedition was sponsored by a grant from HSBC in the Community (USA) Inc. From March 13 – 27, Megan joined four other Earthwatch volunteers from the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan for the “Mammals of Nova Scotia” project. Two of the volunteers were teachers also sponsored through the Live From the Field Fellowship. The research team was led by Dr. Chris Newman and Dr. Christina Buesching of Oxford University.

“I came home from my Earthwatch expedition feeling a whole new sense of connection to the natural world, a fresh understanding of climate change and the need to act now, and a renewed enthusiasm for the way I teach science to my students,” said Dosmann.

Toomer Elementary teacher will join Earthwatch expedition in Nova Scotia

Fred A. Toomer Elementary School’s first grade teacher Megan Dosmann was recently awarded an Earthwatch Live From the Field Fellowship. On March 13, Dosmann will leave on a two-week expedition with Earthwatch to study the effects of climate change on mammals in Nova Scotia. The expedition, from March 14-27, is sponsored by HSBC in the Community (USA) Inc. Read more about Ms. Dosmann’s expedition in Nova Scotia here. Dosmann will blog for her students at Toomer Elementary School and families throughout the expedition here.

Earthwatch, the world’s largest environmental nonprofit volunteer organization, is based in Metro Boston. Its mission is to engage people worldwide in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment. Since its founding in 1971, the organization has supported nearly 1,360 projects in 120 countries and 36 states. More than 93,000 volunteers have contributed $72 million to scientific fieldwork.

APS rings in Chinese New Year with Confucius Institute performance at Maynard H. Jackson High

More than 500 stuents in APS’ Chinese-language program attended and performed at the annual Chinese New Year celebration, held this year at Maynard H. Jackson High School. In this “Year of the Tiger” celebration, Coan Middle students performed “The Story of Nian”; Jackson High students performed “Happy New Year”; Toomer Elementary students performed “Pulling Out the Turnip”; North Atlanta High students performed “Joyous Chinese New Year”; and Carver Early College students performed three “Short Stories.” The audience was also treated to a professional puppet show from the visiting Tiger Tales Performance Troop.

The language program is part of the Confucius Institute Atlanta, a partnership between APS, Emory University and Nanjing University in China. This year APS has assumed stewardship over the program in what is basically a rotating responsibility with Emory. “We’re focusing a lot this year on making sure students progress in terms of language acquisition as well as cultural awareness,” said Anita Lawrence, coordinator of world languages for APS. “And this year it was very important for us to bring in a professional performance so our students could see an authentic aspect of Chinese culture.”

Toomer Elementary establishes diplomatic relations with Ambassador Young

Toomer Elementary School welcomes APS and the entire school community to participate in a “Talk with a Historical Icon Session” with former Atlanta Mayor and U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young on Friday (Feb. 19), from 1 p.m t0 2 p.m. in the school auditorium. Toomer Principal Nicole Evans Jones and Toomer’s parent liaison, Joi Jackson, arranged the event and in recognition of Black History Month. It’s an excellent opportunity for students to learn about the historical time frame of the Civil Rights Movement, and to have a personal encounter with a historical icon such as Young.

The event will provide Toomer’s third-, fourth- and fifth-graders, parents and community members with an opportunity to listen to Andrew Young speak. Following the speech, the audience will participate in a question-and-answer session. Toomer’s third-, fourth- and fifth-graders have learned about Young by reading biographical information, completing research and learning about his role in the movement, and the entire school community is looking forward to the event.

‘APS Today’ showcases Principal for a Day program tonight at 9 p.m.

Tune in to PBA30 tonight at 9 p.m. for the latest episode of “APS Today,” hosted by Nwandi Lawson. This month’s episode will focus on the exciting Principal for a Day program in which high-profile members of the community spend a day learning more about Atlanta Public Schools. While every school participates in the October program, the featured schools for this episode are Toomer Elementary (pictured), Springdale Park Elementary, and Coan Middle. Confucius Institute partners celebrate autumn at Coan Middle

Burgess-Peterson Academy former principal David White came out of retirement to return as the school site manager.

Students from around Atlanta Public Schools and partners from both Emory University and Nanjing University came together as part of the Confucius Institute‘s 2009 Mid-Autumn Festival held Thursday at the Atlanta Confucius Institute, which is housed at Coan Middle. Performers ranged from Coan and the four other APS participating schools: Toomer Elementary and Carver School of the Arts, Maynard H. Jackson and North Atlanta high schools.

Guests enjoyed a mix of culturally enriching performances from the Confucius Institute, a program that celebrates the study of Chinese culture and language as students from K-12 study Mandarin Chinese. Performances included a dragon dance, Chinese dialogue, recitation of poems, a rap song, skits and a performance by Emory student Julie Zhu Weijia on the ghuzhen instrument for the crowd-pleasing “Fishermen’s Evening Song.” Monishae Mosley-O’Neill, APS director of literacy and world languages, offered a closing-ceremony speech.

Principal for a Day: Toomer Elementary welcomes Valarie Acree, Anthony Jewett

Toomer Elementary Principal Nicole Evans Jones hosts Anthony Jewett and Valarie Acree.

Toomer Elementary‘s Principal for a Day featured a double-shot of community partners as Valarie Acree, Target Assets Protection Team Leader, and Anthony Jewett, Zeist Foundation Fellow, visited the school in their honarary role.

The Principals for a Day began their morning with an inspirational announcement to students, parents, faculty and staff. “I am so excited to be here, said Jewett.” “Principal for a Day really gave me a chance to come inside the walls of Atlanta Public Schools and see all the wonderful things that I so often hear about.”

New Toomer principal Nicole Evans Jones provided an overview of the Direct Instruction reading model and the Mandarin Chinese language program that also extends to Coan, the feeder middle school. A school tour followed with observations of reading, mathematics and foreign language instruction.

The PFADs were “assigned” to lunch duty where they interacted one-on-one with students and heard first-hand about instruction and activities at the school. “We are looking forward to continuing our partnership with Toomer in support of our commitment to public education,” said Acree. “There are wonderful things happening here at Toomer and inside of Atlanta Public Schools.”
