Atlanta Public Schools (APS) will celebrate its early education teachers, staff, and students from October 7 to 11 as part of Georgia Pre-K Week.
Georgia Pre-K Week is an opportunity to bring awareness to the Pre-K program’s impact on students and showcase what high-quality early childcare education looks like.
APS’ Pre-K programs are housed in 38 elementary schools and have 57 classes across the district. There are traditional classrooms and blended classrooms, which are in partnership with the Greater Atlanta YMCA HeadStart program. APS Pre-K programs have a credentialed and certified teacher and an associate teacher for support. The classes have a 1:10 ratio with a maximum of 20 students.
“Our program is a play-based program. The classrooms are interactive, developmentally appropriate, and they are filled with many materials and activities,” APS Director for Early Learning Dr. Joye Bradley said. “Our classrooms are established with learning centers which are divided primarily based on our Georgia early learning and development standards.”
The Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) and the Frank Porter Graham Institute evaluated the benefits of Georgia’s Pre-K Programs. The study highlighted that children who attended Georgia’s Pre-K program were more prepared for kindergarten. Children in Georgia’s Pre-K program showed significant growth across all learning domains, including Language and Literacy, Math, and social-emotional skills.
“One of the greatest benefits (of the APS Pre-K program) is that it gives a child an opportunity to be ready for school,” Bradley said. “Children that enter kindergarten with school readiness skills are more likely to experience academic success.”
This year’s Georgia Pre-K Week theme is inspired by the book “A Magnificent Trip to the Governor’s Mansion,” written by former University of Georgia wide receiver and Super Bowl champion Malcolm Mitchell. During the week, APS Pre-K students will read books based on taking trips and participate in activities based on those books.
