Young journalists at Perkerson develop a daily news show

Students at Perkerson Elementary have been busy practicing their broadcast news skills each morning as they prepare the ‘Perk up Perkerson’ daily newscast. The newscast is broadcast to students and staff providing news and announcements for the day.

The students involved in the production write the scripts for the show and develop new and innovative segments to share with the student body.

The student production team recently introduced a new weather segment and held focus groups with fellow students to hear what types of coverage and information their audience would like to receive.

Perkerson Urban Forest Work Day

SONY DSCFifth graders from Perkerson were recently out blazing trails, planting native Georgia plants, picking up litter, and creating artwork in the Perkerson Elementary School Urban Forest. The purpose of the work day was to allow students and the community to come together to enhance and transform the urban forest at the school.  During the work day, students were provided the opportunity to explore nature and learn about the environment.  SONY DSC

The work day began with the “Plants do the Weather Dance” that got all the students and volunteers energized and excited about the day of activities ahead of them.

Students were then divided into four work stations that consisted of trailblazing, planting, artwork, and litter pickup and rotated among these stations throughout the day. The event ended with all of the students creating chalk murals about the urban forest on the front sidewalk of the school.

SONY DSCThe work day was the first of many curriculum-driven activities that will transform the forest into outdoor learning centers and classrooms for students and teachers. The event was organized through Perkerson Elementary’s educational partnership with Trees Atlanta.

The Joseph E. Lowery Institute partners with Perkerson Elementary to promote conflict resolution

As a part of the “Violence Initiative in Schools,” the Joseph E. Lowery Institute mentors have partnered with Perkerson Elementary School to teach students about peer mediation and conflict resolution.

The Joseph E. Lowery Institute has a long-standing tradition of promoting programs and initiatives focused on non-violence, educational opportunities, social justice, community engagement and individual empowerment.  The mission of the Institute is to provide a platform for citizens to learn about nonviolent advocacy. Central to this mission is a push to provide future leaders and “change agents” with opportunities to explore the justice and human rights for all people.

Twelve undergraduate student mentors from the Institute work directly with Perkerson’s fifth grade students on the initiative. The mentors hope to serve as effective mediators and shining examples of resolution and understanding for the students at Perkerson.

Meet the Sheep at Perkerson Elementary

Students at Perkerson Elementary School recently got an up close and personal look at sheep and goats in their own backyard!

Perkerson’s Partner In Education, Trees Atlanta, provided more than 100 sheep and goats to eat the invasive plant growth at the school’s urban forest.

The removal of the unwanted plants will allow the school to develop hiking trails. In collaboration with Lauren Sandoval of Trees Atlanta, Perkerson students will assist with designing functional uses for the hiking trails for the school and community to enjoy.

Perkerson – Rialto Center Flamenco Artists in Dual Spanish Immersion Program

The Rialto Center Flamenco Artists paid a visit to the kindergarten, first and second grades at Perkerson Elementary on August 16th! As a part of Perkerson’s Dual Spanish Immersion curriculum, the Rialto Center Flamenco Artists danced to Spanish guitar, sang in Spanish and provided instruction in Spanish for the K through 2nd graders! There was lively and active audience participation and featured students were on stage with jumbo flashcards for Spanish call and response with the Rialto Flamenco Artists.

Perkerson and D.H. Stanton are two of six schools across Georgia to be awarded a $15,000 grant to implement the Georgia Dual Immersion Program. This program supports acquisition of advanced-level skills in world languages and provides students and communities with competitive advantages in an increasingly global economy.  During implementation of these programs, the World Languages and Global Initiatives Unit of the Georgia Department of Education will collaborate with district and school leadership to ensure proper oversight of research-based principles of dual-immersion language development.

APS and Perkerson would like to thank the Rialto Center for its continued partnership with Perkerson and assisting them in Spanish instruction as part of the new Dual Spanish Immersion program at Perkerson Elementary!

D.H. Stanton and Perkerson’s Kindergarten Dual Immersion Spanish Program

D.H.Stanton Elementary School and Perkerson Elementary are accepting applications for the Kindergarten Dual Immersion program for the 2013 – 2014 school year.  The goal of the program is for students to become bilingual and biliterate in Spanish by the end of fifth grade. All students who are upcoming kindergarteners in Atlanta Public Schools are eligible for this program.

“This is a great opportunity for our students to participate in a program that will help them complete globally,” says Dr. Clara Taylor, Principal at D.H. Stanton.  “While many pay thousands of dollars for a similar program, this is offered in a public school setting, and we are excited to step up to the plate in educating students in a multi-lingual environment.”

“When we give kids a second language, the world becomes smaller. They become more collaborative, more empathetic, they become better global learners overall. These students are opening up opportunities for themselves to become prepared and compete for jobs that don’t exist yet. That kind of foresight and preparation is powerful,” says Perkerson Principal Shawn Bender.

Perkerson Elementary awarded $2,500 to improve Media Center

Perkerson_ComcastComcast recently awarded Perkerson Elementary a grant of $2,500 to improve their media center.  The grant was written by Mrs.Gloria McCullough-Wright, the Media Specialist at Perkerson Elementary.  Marcus Bishop  and Karen Ross helped to coordinate the entire Comcast “Cares Day” Project. The funds were used to reinvigorate the media center/library under the theme, bringing the outside in.  On April 27th, 197 volunteers painted pictures of trees and bushes throughout the media center and hallway. The many volunteers extended their services to help with the school by cleaning the outside grounds and assisting teachers in their classrooms. This was a spectacular event for the Perkerson community, Comcast employees and the 100 Black Men of Atlanta. Great job, Comcast and Perkerson!Perkerson_Comcast3

Perkerson’s Principal Bender Earns Travel Scholarship to Peru with EF Educational Tours

EF Educational Tours, the world’s leading educational travel company, has awarded a travel scholarship for a free EF Professional Development Tour to Peru this summer to Shawn Bender, Principal at Perkerson Elementary School in the Atlanta Public School District in Atlanta, GA. 

“Service learning is an incredibly important learning tool that empowers students and educators to solve problems in their own communities. Our program promotes positive thinking and reflection about the self and community, encourages greater civic engagement, supports positive cross-cultural and intergenerational experiences, and can create a lifelong connection and commitment to service and social action.” said John Giannatonio, Service Learning Program Manager at EF Educational Tours.  “Our program integrates education and international travel, provides service to communities and organizations in need, and mindfully develops educators who embody broad perspective and global compassion.”

Mr. Bender is one of 30 teachers, administrators and educational leaders selected nationwide for this unique professional development opportunity. As the world leader in international education, EF choses the scholarship recipients because of their interest in and dedication to international education, service learning, and global awareness. Mr. Bender comes to APS from his previous position at Tyler Elementary School in Washington, D.C. where he served as Assistant Principal for the last two years. In addition to this experience, he previously taught elementary schools in Atlanta and Brooklyn. Most recently, Perkerson Elementary was one of six new dual immersion elementary schools that were recently awarded start-up grants to support materials and professional development in the 2013 – 2014 school year. The school will receive a grant for start-up and training costs to implement dual-immersion instruction in languages deemed vital to the economic development of our state and region. Mr. Bender and the other scholarship recipients will travel on one of two EF Professional Development Scholarship Tours to Lima, Cuzco, and the Sacred Valley from June 24th to July 3rd, 2013. The free tour includes round-trip airfare, hotel accommodations, meals, guided sightseeing tours and an EF Tour Director. In addition to visiting sites such as Machu Pichu, Korikancha Temple, and the Monastery of San Francisco, the EF scholarship recipients will visit local schools and participate in a two day service learning program in the village of Cachiccata.

“This is an amazing opportunity for U.S. educators to immerse themselves in a new culture, take part in a language exchange, and work directly with local school children,” Giannantonio said. “They will have a lot of valuable and rewarding experiences to bring back to their own classrooms and communities.”

An extension of its industry-leading educational tours for teachers and students, EF’s Professional Development Tours give teachers and administrators an opportunity to experience local cultures and education systems firsthand while traveling with other educators. Because EF is the only fully accredited student travel company, the scholarship recipients also may choose to earn professional development credit for coursework associated with the tour.

Rialto Center for the Arts and Perkerson Elementary arts partnership

The Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State has served this past year as Perkerson Elementary‘s official arts partner.  The Rialto Center has brought professional jazz musicians to Perkerson to teach the children about America’s indigenous art form, a hip-hop dance company from New York, and regularly sends Georgia State University students for engagement with the students. One of the highlights of this past year was the presentation of Perkerson’s holiday musical on the Rialto lobby stage as part of the First Thursday Downtown ArtWalk in December.

Georgia Announces Six New Elementary Dual-Immersion Programs For The 2013-2014 School Year

April 17, 2013 ­–Six new dual immersion elementary schools were recently awarded start-up grants to support materials and professional development in the 2013-2014 school year. These elementary schools will receive grants in the amount of $15,000 each for start-up and training costs to implement dual-immersion instruction in languages deemed vital to the economic development of our state and region.

“Based on what global companies in Georgia tell us, we have set a goal for Georgia to have twenty dual-immersion programs in place by 2020,” said State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge. “These programs will help ensure a Georgia workforce that is fluent in languages and skilled at cultural interactions that are necessary for the economic development of our state and region.”

The Georgia Dual Immersion Program supports acquisition of advanced-level skills in world languages and provides students and communities with competitive advantages in an increasingly global economy.  During implementation of these programs, the World Languages and Global Initiatives Unit of the GaDOE will collaborate with district and school leadership to ensure proper oversight of research-based principles of dual-immersion language development.

Students who complete dual-immersion programs will be prepared to continue higher-level study of language through middle and high school. Many of these students will be able to complete a college minor in their language prior to graduating from high school and will have the language expertise to study and work abroad – even selecting entire university or technical college programs overseas.

Additional support for the Georgia Dual Immersion Program has been provided by The German American Cultural Foundation (GACF), The Halle Foundation, and the German Consulate General in Atlanta.

Georgia Dual Immersion Program Basics:

The Georgia Dual Immersion Program will use the 50/50 model, in which students spend half of the school day in the target language and the other half-day in English

–        The state’s programs will begin in Kindergarten and maintain the 50/50 model throughout elementary school

–        The state’s model will be a two-teacher model, one who instructs exclusively in the target language for half the day, and a second who teaches in English for half the day

–        The state model currently supports dual-immersion program development and offers curriculum in Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Chinese languages.  Each of these languages is determined to be a language vital to economic development and growth in our state and region.

–        In grades 7-9, one content course will be taught in the target language, and a second course in advanced language study will be made available

–        Many students will enroll in Advanced Placement language coursework and complete the AP exam in 9th grade

–        In grades 10-12, students may select to continue advanced language study through partnerships with area universities (possibly completing a university minor in the language while in high school), schools may offer advanced language study opportunities, or students may begin study of a third language

–        Schools receiving these start-up grants will receive targeted professional development and will take part in the new Southeast Dual Immersion Institute (SEDII) scheduled for July, 2013.  This institute will be supported through a STARTALK teacher training grant provided by the National Security Language Initiative and in partnership with Georgia Regents University.
