Bunche Middle School will relocate this school year to make way for 64,000 square feet of additions & 85 square feet of renovations, inculding a new gym, softball field, science labs, an auditorium and natural grass football field that can be used for soccer and lacrosse.
The journalism students at Maynard Jackson High School are privileged to gain hands-on experience in the classroom. They are learning photography, video production, and post production while exploring their creativity and talents.
Mr. Henderson Maddox is their broadcast/video production teacher who joined Jackson last year. He is a filmmaker himself, with 8 years of teaching experience as well. His goal is for the students to acquire skills that will open doors for future success.
The first year class covers the basics of video production, including shot composition. The students are working on a photography project, which allows them to explore the surrounding areas capturing shots of landscapes, architecture, etc. These photos are compiled into a photo album, as a reference for the student’s work. The second year class applies what they’ve learned last year as they create short films and learn more in-depth about the world of journalism. They are introduced to news production, including reporting, and how it differs with narratives and short films. The third year class is an independent class that works on several projects throughout the year. These projects include a timeline of their senior year, as well as a video yearbook, that captures the whole year for students and is great for fundraising for equipment.
“What I like most about this class is that we are very independent. When we come inside this class, Mr. Maddox gives us our assignment and he tells us when it’s due and we’re responsible for getting it done on a certain day,” says Daresha Scott, a senior at Jackson high school.
The fourth class is also independent but counts as an internship. Although the students are not allowed to leave the classroom, they will gain real world experience even at school! The students work as post-production editors and edit footages that Mr. Maddox shot over the summer, and will receive credit for their work. Their credit will be listed in IMDB.com and can be added to their resume. The internship requires them to create 4 promos, create a trailer, and edit all 10 episodes of the show, including teasers. This is a great opportunity for students to have a head start in their production career, with a work reel to show for it!
It is inspiring to see high school students pursuing their dreams and preparing for the real world. They are active in learning and gaining a skillset that explores their creativity and exercises effective communications.

Atlanta Public Schools‘ lottery system will determine who gets the 880 state-funded pre-K slots in 44 APS classrooms at 32 sites. Parents can register their child for the 2011-12 school year if he or she is 4 years old on or before September 1, 2011. Following are key dates and locations (with mapping hyperlinked):
- Sat., April 16 (8 a.m.-6 p.m.) – registration at Maynard H. Jackson High School
- Thurs., April 21 (6 p.m.-9 p.m.) – registration at the Instructional Services Center at the Dean Rusk Building

Atlanta Public Schools‘ valedictorians, salutatorians and “STAR” students were honored Wednesday morning with a breakfast hosted by Georgia Power and featuring Superintendent Dr. Beverly L. Hall.
“This celebration is one of my favorite events – for two very good reasons. First, it kicks off graduation season in Atlanta Public Schools. And second, this event represents the school district’s collective opportunity to publicly and proudly acknowledge the work of our valedictorians, salutatorians, STAR students, and STAR teachers,” Dr. Hall told the gathering.”
Dr. Hall went on to acknowledge sponsor Georgia Power, APS Associate Superintendent of High Schools Randolph Bynum, and the school principals, staff members, teachers and counselors. Dr. Hall also singled out the STAR teachers and students, the latter of whom scored the highest on their college entrance exams. The STAR student then selects the teacher who they believe made the difference in their education.
“STAR teachers were chosen for their significant contribution to students’ scholastic development,” Dr. Hall said. “Through their talent and passion, these teachers have left an indelible mark on their students’ lives – and for that, again, we thank them.”
Atlanta Public Schools salutes the heroes of Black History Month with compelling programming on its two television channels. First we invite you to flip to Channel 22 to watch “A History of Black Achievement in America,” an original, eight-part series that documents black achievement in American history, its defining role in the growth of the country, and its influence on current events. Presented by James Avery, the series highlights the many contributions of black Americans who have influenced our culture, enriched our society with their achievements, and shaped the history of the United States.
Then there’s this month’s episode of “APS Today,” on PBA30. The February edition is hosted by Maynard H. Jackson High students Alexus Montalvo and Montanez Baugh (pictured, above) as we feature five African-American APS graduates who have established themselves in various professions and civic causes. The show airs Monday, Feb. 14, at 11 p.m.
Four APS high schools have been recognized by the College Board as Advanced Placement (AP) Honor Schools for their students’ performance on the tests associated with these rigorous college preparatory courses. The schools are recognized in several categories as listed below:
* 2011 AP Challenge Schools – Carver School of Health Sciences and Research, Maynard H. Jackson High School
* 2011 AP Access and Support Schools – Henry W. Grady High School
* 2011 AP STEM Schools – Benjamin E. Mays High School, Henry W. Grady High School
Grady High School was recognized in two categories of AP achievement.
AP Challenge Schools are those with enrollments of fewer than 900 students and with students testing in the four core areas of English, mathematics, social studies and science.
AP Access and Support Schools are those with 30 percent taking the AP tests that are African American or Hispanic and at least 30 percent of all AP exams scores at 3 or higher.
AP S.T.E.M. Schools are those with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses and with at least 40 percent of the exam scores on AP math and science scoring a 3 or higher. Scoring 3 or better is considered passing on AP exams with 5 being highest achievable score.
Fifth-grade students from Burgess-Peterson Academy joined the ROTC from Maynard H. Jackson High today to wish the senior residents of Branan Towers retirement community a happy Thanksgiving. During the hour-long visit, the students distributed handmade cards and gift bags filled with candy and small essentials.
