Gideons Elementary Junior Beta Club member wins at national convention

Gideons Elementary School‘s Junior Beta Club members participated in the 14th annual National Beta Club convention in Louisville, Ky., in late June. The students entered in several competition categories, including essay, arts & crafts, cross-stitching, scrapbooking and water coloring. Fifth-grader Jasmaine Tinsley won first place in the essay category. Her essay was one of 28 entries judged nationwide. Jasmaine received a plaque and certificate. The sponsoring teachers were Darlene Dobbs, Veronica Jordan and Camille Neely. Principal Armstead Salters also supported the students’ participation. The National Beta Club continually seeks ways to develop and nurture elementary and secondary school students by providing opportunities and experiences that enable them to demonstrate the ideals of character, achievement, service and leadership.

Gideons Elementary students give ‘Pennies for Patients’

In just under a month, students at Gideons Elementary School raised $1,800 to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Pennies for Patients” program. Gideons’ students in all grades donated their pennies and encouraged family, loved ones and friends to do the same. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society offers schoolchildren in more than 3,000 schools around the country the chance to help children battling leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma by collecting spare change. Six Gideons’ classes collected more than $100 for the Society. Top-fundraising honors go to teacher Bernadine Macon’s fifth-grade class, which raised a whopping $540.03. The second-highest fundraising class was pre-kindergarten, raking in $447 by hosting an art auction.

“Our students were excited to participate in this fundraising initiative,” says Principal Armstead Salters. “In doing so, they learned compassion for others and shared in the spirit of selfless giving. I am so proud of their accomplishments.”

Gideons students honored by the governor

From mock trial and wheelchair basketball victories to visits from Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, the month of March has been filled with high notes for the students of Atlanta Public Schools and Thursday was no different.

On Thursday, Gideons Elementary students (front row) paid a visit to Governor Sonny Perdue’s office to receive special recognition for their art work. Every year the Georgia Department of Agriculture sponsors an art/essay contest for students in grades K-8.  This year’s theme was, “Agriculture: Touching Every Georgia County.” The following Gideons students received special recognition:

  • Naomi Yearwood: 1st place recipient of $200
  • Jackson Chadwick: 2nd place recipient of $100
  • Avery Dixon: 3rd place and recipient of $50
  • Nadia Beavers: honorable mention

In the 4th – 8th grade art category:

  • Stephanie Willock: 3rd place and the recipient of $50
  • Haley Ford and Mahogany Radford: honorable mention

After their visit with the governor and Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin, students and their families received a grand tour of the capitol. Meet the Atlanta Families’ Awards winners: Cathy Carter

We continue our ongoing series on the Atlanta Families’ Awards for Excellence in Education winners with a profile of Cathy Carter, third-grade department chair at West Manor Elementary School. Currently in her third year at West Manor, Carter also serves on the Mathematics and Science Committee, the One Fair Committee and School Programs Committee, and is a member of the Georgia Science Teachers Association.

Carter has been a teacher for 13 years, all but two with APS. She began her teaching career at Gideons Elementary, where she taught for eight years and was the recipient of Project GRAD-Atlanta’s Master Teacher Award in 2004. She has taught at Oak Knoll Elementary in Fulton County and was a mentor for the Butterflies Girl’s Mentoring group. She also taught Charles Drew Charter School, where she served as mentor with the Go Girl Go Program. She led as a summer camp Creative Writing Coach for students in grades K-8 at the East Lake YMCA via Drew Charter.

Gideons Elementary Junior Beta Club members win big at state convention

Gideons Elementary School‘s Junior Beta Club members were winners at the State Junior Beta Club Convention on Nov. 19-20 in Macon. Jasmaine Tinsley placed first in essay and third in scrapbook design; Geliyah Donaldson, second in watercolors; Hikema Hussien, third in cross-stitch; and Khayree Hasan, fifth in speech. The club received four invitations to attend the national convention in Louisville, Ky., in June 2010.
