APS Leaders to Attend NPU-V, NPU-F and NPU-Z Meetings in November

Across APS, we are re-igniting our community outreach efforts.

We want to share the changes taking place in APS, highlight each community’s neighborhood school, build support for public education, and give parents and others an opportunity to offer us feedback. We want to reach all families, including those who may not be active users of electronic and online media. Therefore, we are re-engaging the city’s 25 neighborhood planning units (NPUs) and dozens of organizations that hold their meetings at community locations, such as local YMCAs, neighborhood recreation centers, faith-based sites and libraries, as well as our schools.

Please see the schedule of community re-engagement meetings for November. Community members who are interested in booking an APS leader for their event should contact External Affairs Manager Nicole Knighten at 404-802-2859.

District schools show they’re ready for Day One APS

“Has it been a good day, or a crazy day?” we asked one of our principals as he shepherded students onto buses at the end of the first day of school Monday. “It’s been a good day! OK, a crazy day, too, but a good day!” he responded, as Atlanta Public Schools’ nearly 48,000 students got their first taste of the 2010-11 school year.

New schools, new students, new staff, new teachers and new buildings were just a few of the reasons for excitement over the new year, as principals also wrestled with new school bus routes. (Check out a comprehensive list of all the new and exciting things going on at APS here.)

But more than anything, students and parents and educators alike were excited about getting back into class and focusing on what’s important: the business of getting a high-quality education in a school system focused on student success.

Neighborhood Celebration: Check out Garden Hills and E. Rivers elementary schools

We continue our look at the northside schools who will represent Atlanta Public Schools in the inaugural Neighborhood Celebration, which will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at North Atlanta High School. We’re very excited to welcome APS (and “Saturday Night Live”) alum Finesse Mitchell (pictured) as our master of ceremonies.

Today we check in on Garden Hills and E. Rivers elementary schools. Both are located in the heart of Buckhead and just off Peachtree Street, these schools have a tremendous tradition and sense of purpose about them.

Garden Hills Principal Amy Wilson is extremely proud of her school’s diverse community that reflects not only the city of Atlanta but also the real world. The school boasts a 15-year partnership with Georgia Shakespeare and provides an academically challenging International Baccalaurate Programme of Inquiry while meeting the individual needs of the various learners at the school. For the Neighborhood Celebration, Garden Hills will have a group of students walk in the “Parade of Schools.” Also expect a choral performance at some point.
