APS teachers sing loud and proud with ASO Chorus … at Carnegie Hall!

Students and parents at Deerwood Academy and several other Atlanta Public Schools ate lunch together on Thursday for Family Engagement Day.

With APS employees like Springdale Park and Usher-Collier Heights elementary music teacher Brianne Turgeon contributing to Talk Up APS, we know we’ve got the district covered. Turgeon shared the following report with us:

On Saturday, Oct. 30, three APS teachers had an amazing opportunity to perform on the most famous stage in the US. Staria Lovelady (F.L. Stanton Elementary, kindergarten), Quyen Nguyen (Peyton Forest Elementary, kindergarten), and Brianne Turgeon (music and chorus, Springdale Park and Usher elementary) performed Janáček’s “Glagolitic Mass” with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as members of the ASO Chorus at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

District schools show they’re ready for Day One APS

“Has it been a good day, or a crazy day?” we asked one of our principals as he shepherded students onto buses at the end of the first day of school Monday. “It’s been a good day! OK, a crazy day, too, but a good day!” he responded, as Atlanta Public Schools’ nearly 48,000 students got their first taste of the 2010-11 school year.

New schools, new students, new staff, new teachers and new buildings were just a few of the reasons for excitement over the new year, as principals also wrestled with new school bus routes. (Check out a comprehensive list of all the new and exciting things going on at APS here.)

But more than anything, students and parents and educators alike were excited about getting back into class and focusing on what’s important: the business of getting a high-quality education in a school system focused on student success.

Neighborhood Celebration: Check out North Atlanta High

As we mentioned yesterday, we’d planned to do a series of little profiles of each school that will participate in Saturday’s inaugural Neighborhood Celebration. And just as we were planning to solicit information from the respective schools, new and really impressive information was already flowing in! Yesterday we gave a little peek at the cool things going on at Jackson Elementary and Sutton Middle.

Today we turn our attention to host school North Atlanta, where there always seems to be something interesting and creative going on. Sure enough, there is, starting with this evening: The North Atlanta High School Jazz Band will perform as part of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra‘s 2009-10 Conversations of Note series at Atlanta Symphony Hall. The series explores how art, history and society intertwine.
