Fund for Teachers: What they’re doing this summer

Not to get all nostalgic or anything, but when we started Talk Up APS toward the end of last summer, one of the first things we did was serve up a series of essays from the Atlanta Fund for Teachers (through the Atlanta Education Fund) winners who wrote about their summer experiences. The essays were a huge hit, and underscored how our APS teachers are at their best when they’re in a constant state of professional development.

So we’re excited to end the 2009-10 school year and look toward the summer with this look at what this year’s crop of Atlanta Fund for Teachers recipients will be doing this summer. We’ll check back in with them from time to time, and get their impressions on what we’re sure will be enriching and fun adventures. (Check out this link for a sampling of those essays.)

Reminder: Deadline for Fund for Teachers fellowship grants is Friday

Do you have any idea how amazing and enriching the Atlanta Education Fund‘s Atlanta Fund for Teachers‘ fellowships are? Then maybe you were elsewhere while we ran this past falls “What I Did This Summer” series that allowed the APS grant recipients to tell in their own words what they out of the experience. Everyone was able to take an amazing trip and brought back their experience to their classrooms. To get an idea, just plug in the words “what i did this summer” into the Talk Up APS search engine in the upper right-hand corner of the homepage and you should get lots of examples. (For one example, check out Dobbs Elementary teacher Xylecia Taylor‘s experience here.)

Now it’s your turn, APS teacher, to apply. The deadline for the grant, which is as much as $10,000, is 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29. APS K-12 teachers with three (3) or more years experience in the classroom are eligible to apply. Past applicants are eligible to reapply. Applications are available at www.fundforteachers.org. ‘How I Spent My Summer’: Charon Kirkland and Lorrae Walker

Our “How I Spent My Summer” series follows the experiences of teachers who were awarded the Fund for Teachers grant through the Atlanta Education Fund. Next up: Last year’s APS Teacher of the Year Charon Kirkland (pictured above) of Carter G. Woodson Elementary and her team member, Scott Elementary‘s Lorrae Walker. The pair traveled to the island of Dominica. Their goal, as they told the AJC: to explore tropical conservation and ecology. Kirkland picks up the story …

Have you ever visited a place that was naturally beautiful and peaceful? On May 31, 2009, my team member, Lorrae Walker, and I set foot on the rugged terrain of Dominica. This little known island is commonly mistaken for the Dominican Republic, but it is a totally different island situated between the islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. Dominica is known as the “nature island” because of its undisturbed natural habitats that include a diverse ecology. These sites have been preserved as national parks and supported by UNESCO, which is what drew our attention to the island. Our Fund for Teachers grant focused on exploring the tropical ecology and conservation practices on the island through a partnership with the Atlanta Botanical Garden. We explored this tiny island that spans 29 miles long and 16 miles wide for seven days of pure adventure.

‘How I Spent My Summer’: Xylecia Taylor

Our “How I Spent My Summer” continues with Xylecia Taylor, a third-grade teacher at Dobbs Elementary. Taylor used her Fund for Teachers grant (through the Atlanta Education Fund) for a trip to Ghana, where she was involved in a range of activities including learning how to harvest bio-diesel fuel. Here’s her story, in her own words …

From the moment I stepped off of the plane, I knew that my life had been blessed and privileged in a most powerful way. On July 6, as I exited the airport in Accra, the capital city of Ghana, I was awe struck by the sights, people, scents, sounds and energy. I vividly remember riding to the Hansonic Hotel feeling a sense of nostalgia for a place to which I had never been. Not only had I received a grant from Fund for Teachers to complete a service learning project and to volunteer my services at an elementary school, but I had the opportunity to discover Ghana, Africa, for myself.

‘How I Spent My Summer’: Sydney Butler

We continue our focus on teachers and how they spent their summer with yet another winner of the Atlanta Fund for Teachers grant, Sydney Butler (above right) of Alonzo A. Crim Open Campus High School. The grant is sponsored by the Atlanta Education Fund.

Ms. Butler traveled to Spain for an international conference on special education. Before the trip, she told the AJC‘s Gracie Bonds Staples, “My desire is to tap into the rich resources of research-based techniques … of professionals from around the world.”
