The Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic gets bigger and bigger every year as it officially kicks off the high school football season in Georgia, and this season, Carver Early College represented Atlanta Public Schools (APS) in one of the events’ marquee games.
The Carver Panthers took the field at Georgia State University’s Center Parc Stadium for their season opener against Hebron Christian on Friday afternoon.
“The locker room experience was great for the team,” Carver head football coach Darren Myles said. “You never know what the future holds for some of these guys. We often become what we see, and the fact that we’re in the locker room lets them know that this is something they can achieve.”
Even though the Panthers lost 43-16, the team fought through the end of the game and found moments to make big plays.
Jarquez Williams, a junior receiver/defensive back, got the Carver fans up out of their seats when he returned a kick 90-plus yards with just under six minutes left in the fourth quarter.
“We lost to a good opponent in Hebron Christian tonight, but the boys kept the fight and that’s all we can ask for,” Myles said.
