How Atlanta Public Schools Is Redefining Postsecondary Readiness

The future of high school is changing.
Across the country, educators and policymakers are asking a critical question: How do we ensure students graduate not only with a diploma but also with a clear and meaningful path forward? In today’s economy, success after high school requires more than academic knowledge. Students need exposure to real careers, opportunities to develop practical skills, and the confidence to pursue multiple postsecondary options.
Atlanta Public Schools (APS) is meeting this challenge with a bold, student-centered vision for postsecondary readiness—one that ensures every student can explore their interests, develop real-world skills, and graduate prepared to pursue one of the district’s Four Es: enrollment in a two- or four-year college; employment in a high-demand, high-wage Metro Atlanta career; enlistment in the armed forces, or entrepreneurship.
That vision is already taking shape across the district. From career pathways embedded in neighborhood high schools to specialized programs like the Atlanta College and Career Academy (ACCA), APS is expanding opportunities that connect classroom learning with authentic career experiences.
In the coming years, those opportunities will continue to grow. In fall 2027, APS will open the School of the Arts at Carver, a specialized learning environment designed for students pursuing careers in music, visual arts, theater, and digital media. At the same time, the district continues to strengthen pathways in high-demand industries such as aviation, healthcare, mechatronics, and advanced technology—ensuring students graduate with the knowledge, credentials, and experiences needed to move confidently into one of the Four Es.
Preparing students for life after graduation begins long before their senior year. Through Individual College and Career Plans, APS students begin exploring their interests and aptitudes as early as eighth grade. To support this process, the district utilizes YouScience, a nationally recognized aptitude and career discovery platform. This tool helps students identify their natural skills and talents and connects them to potential career pathways, providing a strong foundation for informed decision-making.
Using these insights, students work with counselors and educators to develop personalized plans that guide course selection, dual enrollment, and CTAE pathways aligned with their long-term goals. By connecting academic choices to real-world opportunities, APS ensures that learning feels both relevant and purposeful.
Across APS high schools, Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) pathways provide hands-on experiences in industries ranging from healthcare and engineering to business management and digital media. These programs blend rigorous academics with technical skill development, giving students a foundation for both postsecondary education and workforce readiness.
One of the district’s most innovative models is ACAA, which serves sophomores, juniors, and seniors from across the district who spend part of their day at their home high school and part at the academy pursuing specialized pathways that lead to credentials aligned with high-demand careers in Metro Atlanta.
Students at ACCA explore fields such as automotive technology, cybersecurity, culinary arts, carpentry, HVAC and refrigeration, dental science, criminal investigations, and graphic design. Many of these programs are aligned with accelerated pathways through Atlanta Technical College, allowing students to earn industry certifications and college credits before graduation.
For students like Christian Garcia, a senior at North Atlanta High School, these opportunities can be life-changing. Christian completed both cybersecurity and automotive technology pathways at ACCA while simultaneously earning college credit through Atlanta Technical College. Today, he is already working as an automotive technician while pursuing his long-term goal of becoming a shop foreman for Porsche—showing what postsecondary readiness looks like when students graduate with both skills and a clear plan.
Technology is also transforming how students learn within these pathways. At ACCA, students use immersive tools such as augmented and virtual reality to explore complex systems and environments. Using mixed-reality platforms like zSpace, students can virtually examine a car engine, explore the human body, or simulate technical procedures in safe, interactive environments. These tools allow students to practice skills repeatedly while building confidence and mastery.
APS is also expanding opportunities in one of Georgia’s fastest-growing industries: aviation. Through partnerships with Delta Air Lines and postsecondary institutions, the district is developing pathways in Aviation Flight Operations, Drone Technology, and Aviation Maintenance. These programs introduce students to careers ranging from commercial piloting and unmanned aerial systems to aircraft maintenance and engineering, preparing graduates for advanced training and high-demand careers.
Healthcare is another area of strategic growth. The Atlanta Public Schools Medical Academy, scheduled to open in fall 2027, will provide students with hands-on training, simulated clinical environments, and opportunities to earn credentials in phlebotomy, emergency medical response, health information technology, and certified nursing assistance. Graduates will leave not only with a high school diploma but also with college credits and healthcare certifications—positioning them to continue their education or step directly into the workforce.
Together, initiatives like ACCA, CTAE pathways across APS high schools, the School of the Arts at Carver, aviation programs, and the upcoming Medical Academy represent a comprehensive approach to ensuring every APS graduate leaves high school with a clear and meaningful next step.
Whether students pursue college, employment, military service, or entrepreneurship, the goal is the same: to ensure they graduate prepared to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
At APS, postsecondary readiness is not simply a program—it is a commitment. It means giving students access to meaningful learning experiences, exposure to real careers, and the tools to leave high school with both a plan and the confidence to pursue it.
