The Atlanta Board of Education has voted unanimously to extend Superintendent Dr. Bryan Johnson’s contract by one year, through May 30, 2029, following its June 1, 2026, monthly board meeting.

The Board cited measurable progress in academic achievement, employee retention, operational effectiveness, and community engagement as key factors in the decision. Notable highlights include:

  • Balanced budget development aligned to district priorities and fiscal discipline
  • Successful rollout of APS Forward 2040 and expanded community engagement efforts
  • Continued investments in arts, athletics, CTAE, world languages, and innovative student programming
  • Expansion of Student and Family Hubs and targeted supports for attendance and school culture
  • National recognition from Harvard and Stanford University’s Education Recovery Scorecard as a “District on the Rise” for academic recovery and student achievement growth
  • Recognition from the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement, with 34 APS schools designated as “Beating the Odds” schools and 11 schools earning 2025 Single Statewide Accountability System (SSAS) awards

“Dr. Johnson has led Atlanta Public Schools with focus, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to student success,” said Board Chair Jessica Johnson. “The Board remains confident in the direction of Atlanta Public Schools and the momentum being built through our shared commitment to excellence for every child.”

“I am deeply grateful to the Atlanta Board of Education for their continued trust and confidence,” said Superintendent Dr. Bryan Johnson. “The progress we are making across Atlanta Public Schools is the result of dedicated employees, supportive families, committed community partners, and students who continue to inspire us every day. We remain focused on getting back to the basics and ensuring every child has access to the opportunities and support needed to thrive.”
