Office of Equity + Social Justice Receives Rising Star Award from Georgia Minority Supplier Development Council

by Alicia Lurry

The Atlanta Public Schools (APS) Office of Equity + Social Justice recently received the Rising Star Award from the Georgia Minority Supplier Development Council (GMSDC) during the 2025 Spirit of Alliance Awards and 50th Anniversary Celebration.

Held on Friday, Sept. 19 at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis, the awards gala showcased the essential role the GMSDC plays in driving inclusive economic growth, championing diverse businesses, and creating opportunities that strengthen Atlanta communities and drive the city’s economy forward.

The Spirit of Alliance Awards celebrate excellence in inclusive business practices and honor the individuals, small businesses, corporations, and government entities whose efforts have advanced economic equity and the inclusion of small businesses across Georgia.

The momentous occasion was held during Minority Business Opportunity (MBO) Week, Sept. 15-19. MBO Week is an annual, weeklong observance that promotes student entrepreneurship and recognizes, celebrates, and supports minority-owned businesses.

The Rising Star Award specifically recognizes the GMSDC member whose supplier program has been active for less than three years and significantly impacted supplier diversity growth within their organization. The Rising Star awardee demonstrates a proactive commitment to advancing and expanding the presence and capacity of small businesses, laying the groundwork for long-term success.

Brent Bailey, coordinator of Supplier Diversity, said it was an honor to be recognized with this year’s award. He noted that the district’s Supplier Diversity program works to provide equitable access for local, diverse suppliers, create better business practices, and increase job opportunities. The program also exposes students to minority, Black, and women-owned businesses and highlights and showcases student entrepreneurship.

“This recognition reflects the meaningful partnerships we’ve been able to build with small and diverse businesses in such a short time,” Bailey said. “Our commitment has always been to open doors, create opportunities, and support the growth of these businesses alongside our district. To have that work acknowledged is deeply meaningful, and it inspires us to continue strengthening our supplier diversity program in ways that will make a lasting difference for our students, families, and community.”

Dr. Carina Windom, director in the Office of Equity + Social Justice, agreed and said the award marks a proud moment for the entire OESJ team.

“This award speaks to the passion and dedication behind our supplier diversity efforts and the partnerships we’ve built with local small businesses,” Dr. Windom said. “We know that when these businesses thrive, our students and community benefit as well. It reminds us that even in just a few years, intentional work can spark meaningful change—and we’re excited to keep growing that impact.”
