South Atlanta High School Hosts STEAM Cluster Fest

by Thomas Scott

South Atlanta High School students joined a variety of vendors to provide an interactive and educational experience at the South Atlanta STEAM Cluster Fest for the elementary and middle school students visiting from around the South Atlanta Cluster.

South Atlanta STEAM instructional coach Andrea P. Miller said that the STEAM Cluster Fest is meant to inform the community about STEAM instruction and initiatives in the schools while also getting the students excited about going to high school.

Heritage Academy, Humphries Elementary School. Hutchinson Elementary School, Cleveland Avenue Elementary School, J.W. Dobbs Elementary School, and Crawford Long Middle School students traveled to South Atlanta High School to enjoy the day exploring the STEAM-based exhibits.

Between the student exhibits and the community vendors, the South Atlanta STEAM Cluster Fest had nearly 30 exhibits for students to explore and engage with.

Students cycled through the various stations in the school gymnasiums and on the football field, where they enjoyed hands-on learning experiences with coding, drones, virtual reality, gardening, and more.

Representatives from Georgia Tech brought their Eco-Car to share their project with students, and the Emory University Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology station had real brains from a variety of animals on display for students to observe.

South Atlanta High School physics students also presented their projects in multiple stations where they applied what they learned in the classroom to build roller coasters and a vehicle crash test experiment.

Students in the healthcare pathway also provided health screenings for visitors. They performed blood pressure tests, measured height and weight, and also conducted vision screenings. “The theme at South Atlanta High School is advocating for the community through STEM,” Miller said. “We try to promote a lot of projects that focus on a community issue, but then also use STEM and STEAM to problem solve around that.”
