The Human Resources Division successfully launched a newly designed Business Fundamentals Certificate Program with an inaugural cohort on District Professional Day, October 14. The program offers a full day of targeted workshops, developed with input from the Human Resources (HR) districtwide career development needs assessment survey.
Cohort 1 comprised 17 employees from the Operations Division, representing roles such as crossing guards, custodians, security assistants, police dispatchers, and general maintenance workers. These essential team members play a critical role in the daily operations of APS, and the program was designed to equip them with key business skills to enhance their performance and prepare for future career opportunities within the district.
Participants engaged in focused skill-building sessions that covered customer service, communication, finance, information technology, resume writing and interviewing skills, and career planning.
“This is a reflection of our commitment to co-creating opportunities that not only develop our workforce but also prioritize and value the voices of our employees. We have actively listened to what our teams need through our districtwide survey, and we’ve ensured our development programming aligns with their professional goals and aspirations,” said Nicole Lawson, Chief of Human Resources, as she emphasized the strategic importance of designing programs that both empower employees and build district capacity.
Feedback from the inaugural cohort was overwhelmingly positive. One participant shared, “Every session today was so informative and engaging. I feel more prepared to apply these skills in my day-to-day work.” Another participant added, ” I discovered APS has an abundance of resources for us. I can go back to work and tell my colleagues.” Others highlighted the training’s hands-on approach, with one noting, “The sessions helped with my day-to-day operations, and I feel more equipped for success.”
The program’s success also demonstrates the true strength of cross-divisional collaboration within APS. Special thanks and shoutouts to Tara Shelton (Safety & Security), Dr. Veneschia Bryant (Social Emotional Learning), and James Wilborn and Jacque’ Scott (Office of Instructional Technology), whose expert presentations supported efforts to ensure that the training was impactful, relevant, and well-rounded.
Looking ahead, the Business Fundamentals Certificate Program will continue with two additional cohorts scheduled for February 17 and March 17 (the remaining District Professional Learning Days on the 2024/25 School Year calendar). These sessions will allow more APS employees to engage in meaningful professional development as HR prioritizes workforce growth and operational excellence. The program is helping to build a more capable, engaged workforce and will be a staple in the HR Talent Development toolkit.
