Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Bryan Johnson and the Atlanta Board of Education brought the conversation to the community at Virginia-Highland Elementary School during the first of 10 Community Listening Sessions.
As part of his 100-Day Plan, Dr. Johnson outlined his four priorities (Academic Acceleration, Equity, Student & Stakeholder Engagement, Accountability, & Operational Excellence) and then opened the floor to the parents, teachers, and community members in the audience to ask questions, share ideas, and reveal opportunities for APS to address.
“The purpose of the Community Listening Sessions is to listen to the community, to hear from them, to hear where there are opportunities to continue to move forward as we think about strategic plan development,” Dr. Johnson said. “It’s another great opportunity to hear from the public. We try to organically give people the platform to have intentional, respectful dialogue.”
During the first meeting, Dr. Johnson and other district leaders discussed various topics, including school safety and security, assessments, and engagement. Parents and teachers were able to voice their concerns and share their perspectives from home and the classroom.
“It’s going to take all of us to move the district forward,” Dr. Johnson said. “It’s going to take community, staff, students, and everybody else.”
Take advantage of this opportunity to share your ideas to help move APS forward and attend the Community Listening Session for your Cluster. Together, let’s create a stronger foundation for our schools and community.
