APS awards Level Up Minecraft Challenge winners

by Thomas Scott

The winners of the Level Up Minecraft Student Build Challenge received a handful of awards and prizes from the APS Department of Instructional Technology for their amazing Minecraft builds.

In addition to meeting Atlanta mayor Andre Dickens and being recognized at City Hall during the Year of the Youth address, the winners later received a letter from the mayor, a personalized 3D-printed trophy with a QR code linked to their project, and a personal Microsoft Surface tablet and keyboard.

The Level Up Minecraft Student Build Competition challenged Atlanta Public School students to develop potential solutions for major public spaces in Atlanta by using the popular game Minecraft.

The winners of the contest include:

Antoine Everhart-Chapelle Jr., a seventh-grade student at Centennial Academy whose virtual build of The Battery included adding a train stop for transportation.

Anson Wong and Janani Akilan Gandhi, sixth-graders at Howard Middle School, built a virtual rendition of The Beltline and added a playground with a splash pad.

Charlotte Gareau and Lekha Bhimani, sixth-graders at Howard Middle School, placed a community garden in their build of Little 5 Points.

Kennedi Price, a student at Drew Charter School, created an apartment complex with lower-level access for residents with disabilities in her version of Little 5 Points.

Naeto Odioemene, Braxton Sladeke, and Mason Kritz, fifth graders at E. Rivers Elementary School, came together to build a version of The Beltline with a homeless shelter, a Chic-fil-A, and public bathrooms.

Cayden Cornish, Shoshana Baruch, and Stella Bastek were all winners from Maynard Jackson High School. Cornish’s student build featured the Beltline, while Baruch and Bastek worked together to build improvements at Little 5 Points in their Minecraft world.

The future of Atlanta appears bright as APS students use Minecraft to showcase their creativity and ingenuity in reshaping the city.
