If you’ve been wondering how you can make a difference for your APS school or cluster, declare your candidacy and run for a seat on your school’s GO Team.
GO Teams are nine-member governance teams that work with students and school leaders to help them solve issues, take on initiatives and focus on the priorities of their respective schools.
GO Teams consist of elected parent and non-instructional staff members, community members appointed by the principal, student leaders appointed by the principal and the school principal.

The deadline for parents and staff members to declare candidacy for the GO Team elections is Wednesday, February 28, 2024.
“If you are a parent or staff member who ever asked the question, ‘Why or what is going on at the school, or how can I be a solution or drive change?’ then you should consider running for a GO Team seat,” APS executive director of strategy and governance Carolyn Barnett said. “If those are the thoughts in your head, then you need to be at the table helping to shape the future generation that will ultimately be telling us how we should move in the world.”
Every school has its own unique challenges, and GO Teams are able to work with school leaders at the school and cluster level to help meet some of those particular needs. The GO Team at Martin Luther King Middle School developed a conversation about mental health for students by building in mental health breaks during the school day for students.
The CARE team at Midtown High School was a product of GO Team conversations to address mental wellness and community-based needs.
“They’ve been able to assist families who may have been experiencing hard times, especially after COVID,” Barnett said. “Because of that effort from parents, families, and communities coming together, there was just an opportunity to really support the families in the Midtown community.”
There is a GO Team for each APS traditional and partner school. Most GO teams meet at least once a month.
“We really want people at the table who are not just looking at things from one student’s perspective,” Barnett said. “But holistically, how do we ensure success for all students in the building.”
Again, the declaration period ends Wednesday, February 28, 2024. For more information about GO Teams, cluster advisory or the district strategic planning process, visit apsstrongschools.com.
