APS students joined Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring, best-selling authors, and community leaders in Race & Healing: A Community Conversation–a town hall event to promote understanding and justice through literacy.
Moderated by CBS46 Anchor Shon Gables, Race & Healing: A Community Conversation is the official kickoff to the third annual Race2Read Challenge. This year, APS is once again partnering with Urban League of Greater Atlanta to challenge students, teachers, staff, parents, community members and business partners to read daily to help collectively reach 10 million minutes of leisure reading this academic year.
Race & Healing: A Community Conversation was recorded remotely on Sept. 15 and will air Monday, Sept. 21, 2020 at 7 p.m. EST via cbs46.com and www.facebook.com/AtlantaPublicSchools.
The event featured best-selling authors Tiffany Jewell (This Book Is Anti-Racist), Jewell Parker Rhodes (Ghost Boys) and Nic Stone (Dear Martin), and the following APS scholars: Zoe Cannon, 6th grade, Charles R. Drew Charter School; Khamar Carlise, 11th grade, Daniel M. Therrell High School; Madison Flemming, 9th grade, George Washington Carver Early College; Gillam Duckett, 5th grade, Charles R. Drew Charter Schools; and Justin Johnson, 9th grade, George Washington Carver Early College.
