While National Signing Day has become a big event for high school senior football players signing college letters of intent, a “signing day” ceremony of a different sort was held for nine APS eighth graders Oct. 18 at Phoenix Academy. These scholars were selected as REACH scholars for the Class of 2024: Amir Robinson, BEST AcademyJameeya Woods, Brown Middle SchoolCalik Hill, Ralph J. Bunche Middle SchoolShataira Hightower, Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership AcademyAjoni Douglas, John Lewis Invictus AcademyLaiylah Sheffield, The Kindezi School at Old Fourth WardAlexis Hernandez-Tellez, Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle SchoolKelly Abigail Reyes-Cruz, Sutton Middle SchoolLeia Maduakalom, Wesley International Academy REACH, which stands for Realizing Education Achievement Can Happen, is a needs-based mentorship and scholarship initiative that begins in eighth grade. Scholars who successfully complete the program and graduate from high school are awarded a $10,000 scholarship ($2,500/year) that can be used at any HOPE-eligible institution in Georgia.
