CSKYWLA Social Worker Establishes Inaugural ‘Black/Brown Girl Magic’ Project

CSKYWLA Social Worker Latanya Farrar (center) recently established the Black/Brown Girl Magic Project (BGMP), which is designed for women to share positive messages of self-acceptance and guidance to graduating seniors. Farrar is joined by Principal Eulonda Washington (far left), school staff and parents.

On Sunday, May 19, 51 graduating seniors from Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy (CSKYWLA) attended the annual Visions Program as part of the inaugural Black/Brown Girl Magic Project (BGMP).

Inspired by School Social Worker Latanya Farrar, the project’s mission calls for women to personally speak encouragement and inspiration to young ladies via written letters as they transition from high school to college and career. Women were asked to write letters to CSKYWLA scholars on beautifully selected stationary and to share their experiences, allowing for transparency, acceptance, understanding and guidance.

In addition to receiving 15 letters from the Atlanta Hawks organization, students received letters from women in Georgia and across several other states. During the ceremony, each senior’s name was called to receive their journal and personal letter. Each scholar received a journal and pen, thanks to Donors Choose, which funded the project.

Farrar said she is grateful for the support.

“The power of passing down wisdom, experiences and encouragement from one generation to another generation is powerful,” Farrar said. “Every young lady should have the opportunity to receive written letters from other women who proceeded them.”
