APS students win during International Student Media Association competition
The results of the 2013 International Student Media Association (ISMA), formerly the International Student Media Festival (ISMF), have been announced. Four projects submitted by APS students earned the coveted Top Honors award, three were designated Judgesā Favorite, and twenty-seven were awarded Excellence in Media Production.
Projects exceeding the minimum criteria earned the Excellence in Media Production award. A Judgesā Favorite was awarded when judges believe the students have great potential as media producers and particularly enjoyed or were impressed with a project. The Top Honors were awarded to entries that met 100% of the ISMA stringent criteria of excellence and were also Judgesā Favorite.
APS Media Services Coordinator, Warren Goetzel, stated that it does not matter whether a project received an award. He congratulates all APS students who designed, wrote, and produced a media project this year. Goetzel adds, āAPS strongly believes that media production empowers student learning and communication.ā

Atlanta Public Schools has developed a comprehensive plan to increase time and opportunity for students to receive the critical instruction lost this school year during the district’s six inclement weather days. Ā In addition to traditional classroom instruction, students now have an opportunity to complete virtual lessons assigned by their teachers.
Using the district’s new student portal, myBackpack, whichĀ includes Microsoft Office, eBooks, and student digital tools, students can also receive supplemental lessons and materials.
APS students in grades 3-5 will find materials at http://tinyurl.com/apselementarysnow where digital resources aligned with curriculum standards in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies are located. These educational resources provide engaging ways for students to practice what they are being taught in class, from the comfort of home.
Students in grades 6-12 will find content through our new Connected Classroom course management system located at http://tinyurl.com/apssecondarysnow. Digital lessons will be loaded by teachers into each studentās personalized virtual learning environment for their use.
Students should use their APS student login to access their personalized virtual learning environment.

For the past three years, Fickett Elementary School has been supporting the Pennies for Patients campaign, a nationwide program that aids thousands of children and adults in their fight against blood cancer. This year, students and staff at Fickett collected over $1,300.00 in donations towards the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The donations will benefit the life-saving cancer research to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkinās disease and myeloma.
Students and staff were encouraged to join the campaign by bringing spare change to fill collection boxes in the classrooms.Ā The classes with the most donations were rewarded with a pizza party and tickets to the UniverSoul Circus.
Counselor Mary L. King, who coordinated the program, stated that this effort āwas a good way for our students to learn how to give back and share with less fortunate children.ā
Students at Fickett Elementary School participated in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Day with each grade level engaging in hands-on construction projects.
The focus was on the technology and engineering of STEM. Through class discussions, students learned that technology is anything that helps humans solve problems, whether it is an object, system or process.
In addition, they answered questions such as āWhat Do Engineers Do?ā and āWhat Are the Steps in the Engineering Design Process?ā
Papillion Little, the STEM coordinator at Fickett, stated that āSTEM projects help students make science and technology connections to real-life situations.ā

Morningside Elementary School held its annual National Geographic Bee with contestants from the 4th and 5th-grade homerooms. This yearās competition had an unusual twist as 4th-grade twins, Anna and Nathan Rachwalski, both stood as semi-finalists in the competition. The audience held its breath as the twins represented their respective homerooms along with their fellow classmates and battled in the competition for the top prize.
Finally, Nathan emerged as the winner, and his sister Anna congratulated him with a big smile. Nathan will now complete a comprehensive geography test, which screens contestants for the state semi-finals. The national competition will be held in Washington D.C. in May 2014. Congratulations to Nathan, Anna, and all of the contestants for a job well done!
