Christine King Farris reads her book “My Brother Martin: A Sister Remembers Growing Up with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”

In observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, his sister, Christine King Farris, read to children attending After School Classé, an after school program at Hope-Hill Elementary School. Hope-Hill is located down the street from the King family’s home, where Dr. King was born.

King_Hope_Hill_004Farris is an education professor at Spelman College and the author of several books including “March On!: The Day My Brother Martin Changed the World,” and “My Brother Martin: A Sister Remembers Growing Up with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” which she read to Hope-Hill students.

As the nation prepares to celebrate the legacy of  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, January 20th, this event is especially significant to the after school program, and supports the belief that encouraging leadership skills and cultural awareness promotes success for all children.

“We’re honored to have Mrs. Farris here to connect the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to our students, and it is a wonderful learning experience for them,” said Hope-Hill Elementary School Principal Maureen Wheeler.

Nothing is so inspirational than to see the sister of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reading about her brother. She clearly knows more than is in the books. These students are so fortunate.
