Marian McQuade, a housewife in West Virginia, worked to recognize Grandparents Day in the 1970s. She hoped to persuade grandchildren to cherish the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide.
In 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated annually on the Sunday following Labor Day.
This year, grandparents attended a breakfast and presentation in their honor at Bethune Elementary School.
Students presented poems about grandparents as they spent quality time with their loved ones.

Burgess-Peterson Academy celebrated Grandparents Day with a “Passion for Our Elders” event, which was a great success with over 200 grandparents in attendance!
