Fifth graders at Toomer Elementary enjoyed an interactive theater workshop called “Play On! Theatre Games to Build Your Classroom” hosted by the Atlanta Shakespeare Company. The energetic fifth graders were thrilled for the opportunity to be expressive and dramatic with their classmates, teachers, and professional actors.
The Atlanta Shakespeare Company’s Education Department recently received funding from the Power2Give project to partner with Atlanta Public Schools and bring their workshops to 20 classrooms throughout the Atlanta area at no charge to the school.
The workshop itself, Play On!, harnesses the power and passion of game-based learning to target specific skills, including focus, following directions, team work, unlocking the imagination, and listening before reacting. Play On! gives the students the opportunity to play games and experience fun, theatre exercises that target and sharpen these skills, led by our professional actors and teaching artists. A PDF of the Theatre Games Database is also provided to the teacher for their continued use and exploration.
This fall, Play On! will also be partnering with FL Stanton, Grove Park, Humphries, Mary Lin and Deerwood Academy.
