In an effort to promote strong oral communication and presentational skills, Carver Early College hosted the second annual Oratorical Contest on March 21, 2013. Students all over the campus conquered the number one fear of most people, which is public speaking, and delivered inspiring speeches to their audiences. The event was sponsored by the Learning and Achievement Matters Corporation. Bobbi Brooks was the moderator for the event. Dr. Herbie Ross, another sponsor of the contest, told the students that speaking, or the ability to express oneself clearly, was one of the best skills that they could cultivate in the 21st century.
Student after student spoke about their “life stories” in touching, captivating ways. Each speech was judged on six key points: speech development, clarity of purpose, body language, voice, enthusiasm and grammar. Ultimately, three winners emerged. They were: first-place winner Kennedy Davis, second-place winner Zaria Key and third-place winner Ashley Sheats. Their speeches turned to gold as they received medals and cash awards.
