Today a reader. Tomorrow a leader!

At Dunbar Elementary, the Scholastic Book Fair is an exciting event for students, staff, and parents. This year, the book sales at Dunbar exceeded over $1,800.00! Book fairs allow students to purchase books to build their own personal library at home. Hosting a book fair at school is the best way to support the school’s reading efforts. Students, parents, and teachers love Book Fairs for a number of reasons, including:

  • Easy access to a wide assortment of books
  • Children can choose books that inspire them to read more
  • Book fairs involves family and demonstrates that reading is important

Dunbar also hosted a Family Reading Night, where family members gained a deeper understanding of the important role they play as reading role models. The Family Reading Night offered:

  • Facilitated discussion and high-quality, research-based informational resources for families to use at home
  • A chance for parents and family members to discuss how to create literacy-rich home environments
  • Everyday activities to build children’s literacy skills

“With every fair, we’re connecting kids to books they want to read,” says Alan Boyko, President of Scholastic Book Fairs. “That’s so important, because the more kids read, the better readers they become, and the more successful they’ll be in school, in work, and in life.”

Battle of the Coins is a competition between grade levels to raise money to buy books for the school’s library.  Each grade level was asked to bring in certain coins on certain days, and the students raised over $250.00!
