Fox 5 Meteorologist visits Benteen Elementary

Steve Milone gives students a tour of the Storm Chaser vehicle.

Fox 5 Weekend Morning Meteorologist Steve Milone visited the second graders at Benteen Elementary with a storm chaser vehicle. The students learned about the daily duties of a meteorologist directly from the source.

Milone explained his job responsibilities, and how Fox 5 can broadcast live over the internet through the storm chaser vehicle. “We need to get ahead of the storm to let everybody know what is coming their way,” Steve shared.  The students walked around the vehicle as he provided a tour of the truck, exposing the cameras in the front and the editing equipment in the backseat. He concluded his presentation with a question and answer session that pleased their curious minds.

The students are currently learning about the weather in their science class, and the teachers were inspired to invite a meteorologist in order to make the lessons applicable and real to them.

“It’s better for them to learn from someone in the field rather than a classroom teacher,” says Brittney Billingslea, a 2nd grade teacher. “They are able to have a hands experience, questions answered by a professional, and a fun experience while learning!”
